Businessman Mak Pak Chuen, while on a trip, takes pity on an orphan girl and adopts her. On returning home, Mak learns that his wife has died while giving birth to a baby girl. Mak becomes ill from despair. Just before he dies, he instructs his brother-in-law, Chan Tsak Chong, to bring up the two girls. The adopted girl, Piu Mui, becomes a servant in the Chan household, while Mak's daughter, Yin Ling, goes to school with Chan's son, Bing Kwong. Yin Ling falls in love with Law Suet Chau, arousing the jealousy of Bing Kwong, who slanders Suet Chau. Yin Ling believes the slander that Suet Chau has slept with prostitutes and shifts her emotions to Bing Kwong. One day, Yin Ling is injured in an accident. Bing Kwong uses the opportunity to make advances on Piu Mui and rapes her. When Yin Ling recovers, she thinks that Piu Mui has stolen Bing Kwong from her. As a result, she becomes intimate again with Suet Chau. The years pass. Piu Mui gives birth to Bing Kwong's son, but he abandons them to live on the streets. Mother and son meet Yin Ling, now married to Suet Chau. Piu Mui tells Yin Ling about the past, and they reconcile. War erupts. Suet Chau is abroad on business. The two sisters are forced into prostitution to make ends meet. They meet Bing Kwong by chance, and Yin Ling kills him accidentally. She is sentenced to life imprisonment. When the war ends, Suet Chau hears Piu Mui singing in the street one day, thereby reuniting with her. Together they visit the dying Yin Ling in prison. After Yin Ling's death, Piu Mui dies of grief.
