Kham does not believe in the supernatural or the lord tree guardian Chao Pho Phra Sai, revered by those in his village. He rejects those beliefs and devotes his energy instead to providing for himself and his son. When his son tragically passes away, the villagers say it's divine punishment for failing to respect the lord Phra Sai. In his emotional turmoil, Kham decides to destroy the shrine of Chao Pho Phra Sai. When he collapses due to exhaustion, the villagers believe it's due to possession by the lord and that he will become his shaman. When Yisun is released from prison for a murder he didn't commit, he finds that his wife has married the man whose accusations landed him there, his son fears him, and he struggles to find work to support his mother as society shuns him. As a last resort, he becomes a snake catcher. With belief that the lord resides within Kham, the villagers' attitudes towards him change, and Kham comes to know what power feels like. Fueled by greed, he begins to use their belief as a tool to gain wealth and influence. Meanwhile, Sun has lost faith in the goodness the villagers hold in esteem and tries to shake truth into the merit-chasing worshippers, but his prior conviction makes it impossible, so he retreats into his work where he can only regard them with pity.
