At the end of 1992, a group of Black-faced Spoonbills was viciously shot and killed by an unknown person in Qigu District, Tainan, triggering much public attention in Taiwan. The photographer, Wang Zheng Ji, who was sent to cover the incident, has embarked on the road of protecting the Black-faced Spoonbills for 30 years since then. At the time, there were less than 300 Black-faced Spoonbills in the world, and this endangered species was receiving attention from many countries. Bird lovers from different disciplines worked together across borders to help the Black-faced Spoonbill survive. Among them are academics, picture book writers, birdwatchers, grassroots civil servants, breeders and many more unsung heroes, each with their own personal Black-faced Spoonbill story. Wang Zheng Ji, who has been devoted to the Black-faced Spoonbill for 30 years, has never changed his mind, even after the loss of his wife and suffering cancer. Today, the global population of black-faced spoonbills has exceeded 6,000, but they are not resting on their laurels and their conservation journey continues.
