Good Enough

Korean Drama 'Salon De Holmes' is a mystery comedy.

The drama has many mystery cases, with the big criminal case as the climax. The story is light and funny, but has its darker side, which was nicely handled and fitted easily into the story. The group of women of the Salon de Holmes was endearing as well. And even though the drama doesn't show their individual stories thoroughly, they were interesting as characters and had chemistry between them.

The final episodes, however, were a bit far-stretched, and there were twists that were not realistic.

Finally, the performances were all enjoyable by everyone in the cast.

So, overall, seven out of ten.

Upgrade neighborhood watch.

Something about this drama reminds me of Seoul Busters.Came across a reel of the scene of the supermarket hostage situation and i decided to watch it.They are upgrade of the neighborhood watch, solving cases in their neighborhood smartly. They never rashly tried to handle the cases but approached the situation with caution. When the women band together they are a force to reckon with and a menace to their opponents. There are certain comedic moments just had me doing a rewind especially the marriage of the ex policewoman and her cop husband.I think they did the minimart lady dirty by giving her older character a really old husband....By the time of writing this review there are rumors of a second season, hope they don't drop the ball on it.

Jumvengers, assemble!

I havent come across a show that could make me laugh my heads off and then sob in the next minute since A Dream Within a Dream, until Salon de Holmes came along my feed. I was laughing my heads off with tears in my eyes on Ep 2, then shed quite a bit of tears before 10minutes in, so much that I immediately declared Jung Young Joo to be my new favourite korean actress after Lee Siyoung. Heck this is also my first Lee Siyoung’s show that her character didnt become my most favourite one, cuz hers here was sleuth instead of a full on martial fighter.

The show tells the story of 4 women in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s who met each other in a mall hostage incident where they ended up solving the mistress mystery of the gunwoman. Forming a group of friendly neighbourhood sleuths to pass their time, the first case being a simple parking hoarder gradually escalated into a more serious case with each episode, that eventually led them to Gong Miri’s childhood nightmare, the serial killer, Ribbon Man.

This is the first show of Lee Siyoung’s that I saw of her taking up a cheerful, classic clumsy housewife role with no martial ability. All the past roles that i saw of her are cold and reserved women with fighting ability. This Gong Miri role gave me a different perspective of Lee Siyoung’s talent that i never expected of. She was really good at playing Gong Miri that I stopped seeing her as the boxer Lee Siyoung. She really nailed this role that depicts of a housewife who has a rare talent at sniffing clues and deducing mysteries, yet also struggling to handle her in-laws while being frustrated at her husband who’s having problem in the bedroom chores, like how she did her other shows.

Although I liked Gong Miri, i loved Jung Youngjoo’s Chu ‘The Hulk’ Gyeongja even more! Becoming a housewife when she was at the rising stride of her policewoman career was the hard choice she had to make in order to make concessions for her then mentee turned husband upon her retirement. Her husband had been her subordinate when she was in the force, but his low self-esteem never dwindled even after she left, hence he never stopped putting her down when they were around his subordinates. Chu generally plays along but when he pushed her buttons too hard, she had no qualms to turn to violence, which usually puts her husband back in his place cuz he is no match for her strength.

I really love the flow of the plot that gradually escalated from petty parking fights and garbage owner tracking to decade-long serial killer hunt. The writers are also really brilliant at incorporating comedic scenes into sob scenes then goes directly to thrillers. I also love the fact that the lives of the housewives is depicted to be closest to normal daily life with partriachal husbands to bedroom problems to the schoolchildren’s bullying cancer which many viewers can relate to.

The fightings are really good and they definitely did not spare an effort to make our main characters bruise and bleed, or even crack a bone or two for our retired police officer. I miss seeing Le Siyoung fight though, cuz she did none in here. Okay she’s got a few clumsy brawls but that’s just about it, no fancy martial art moves other than those executed by Jung Youngjoo’s Chu ‘The Hulk’ Gyeongja. Like, for real, it is truly mindblowing to know that Jung’s age had been 53 when she filmed the show. All her moves were powerful and she definitely didnt look like someone in her 50s 🤯 This is one of the few things that I admire about kdrama industry - they do not give a qualm about hiring actresses at veteran age as main lead. This is definitely not the first kdrama that I saw above 50yo actress taking up the lead helm. Truly inspiring.

This show definitely did not disappoint and I can’t wait for season 2!

Mystery, Moms, and Missed Potential

Salon De Holmes begins with a promising premise and an engaging first episode that quickly draws viewers into its world. The series introduces a unique concept: a group of mothers who come together to solve various mysteries within their community. The opening episode effectively establishes the tone and dynamic of the group, creating anticipation for how these amateur detectives will tackle the cases that come their way.

However, as the series progresses, the way each case is handled becomes somewhat formulaic. Nearly every episode follows a similar structure in which the group encounters a new mystery and quickly works toward solving it. While the episodic format has the potential to keep the narrative fresh, many of the cases feel overly simplified and are resolved too conveniently. This sometimes diminishes the tension and complexity that a mystery-driven story typically thrives on.

Among the ensemble cast, Chu Kyeong-ja stands out as the most memorable character. Her storyline is arguably the most compelling, offering layers of emotional depth and personal development that make her journey particularly engaging. Close behind is Jeon Ji-hyeon, whose character adds another interesting dimension to the group dynamic.

Bak So-hee, on the other hand, feels underutilized. While she plays a role within the team, her presence throughout the series is inconsistent. She frequently fades in and out of the narrative to the point where her absence can go unnoticed until the group reconvenes. This lack of continuity makes it difficult for viewers to fully connect with her character or understand her role within the larger story.

Another central figure, Gong Mi-ri, brings strong investigative instincts to the group. Her sharp attention to detail and ability to connect clues are key assets when it comes to solving cases. However, her personality can sometimes overshadow these strengths. Her controlling nature and frequent harshness toward her husband make certain scenes uncomfortable to watch. That said, their relationship does provide a realistic portrayal of a marriage struggling with communication. Both characters contribute to the tension in their relationship, highlighting how misunderstandings and unspoken frustrations can shape a partnership.

From a broader storytelling perspective, the overall plot feels somewhat uneven. The narrative has interesting ideas but does not always explore them to their fullest potential. One of the show’s biggest issues lies in its inconsistent character presence. Several characters disappear and reappear without much explanation, which disrupts the flow of the story and weakens the continuity of the ensemble dynamic.

The reveal of the main villain is another aspect that ultimately feels underwhelming. Given the buildup throughout the series, the final reveal lacks the impact and complexity one might expect from a mystery-focused narrative. It leaves the impression that the show had the opportunity to deliver a more satisfying and intricate conclusion.

Despite these shortcomings, the ending clearly sets the stage for a potential second season. With its intriguing concept and strong core characters, Salon De Holmes still has the foundation to evolve into something much stronger. If a second season does move forward, there is significant opportunity to refine the storytelling, deepen the mysteries, and ensure greater consistency in character development and screen presence.

With improved narrative focus and more carefully constructed cases, the series could easily elevate itself from an entertaining but uneven watch into a truly compelling mystery drama.

A Perfect Blend of Mystery, Humour, and Sisterhood

Salon De Holmes is a refreshing drama that perfectly mixes mystery, comedy, and heartfelt emotions into one entertaining story. What starts as a fun and quirky investigation drama slowly turns into a touching story about friendship, courage, and ordinary women doing extraordinary things.

The biggest strength of the drama is its charming group of female leads. Their chemistry feels natural, hilarious, and genuinely comforting. Every character brings a different personality to the story, making their teamwork both chaotic and lovable. Watching them solve mysteries together while supporting each other emotionally became the heart of the drama.

What made Salon De Holmes stand out was its balance. The mystery elements kept the story exciting, while the humor made even serious moments feel enjoyable. At the same time, the drama never forgot its emotional side, showing the loneliness, struggles, and hidden strength of each character in a very relatable way.

The storytelling felt light yet meaningful, and the pacing kept every episode fun to watch without becoming too heavy. It’s the kind of drama that makes you laugh one moment and unexpectedly emotional the next.

Salon De Holmes is more than just a mystery drama — it’s a warm and empowering story about friendship, resilience, and finding confidence through the people around you. A fun, comforting, and unforgettable watch from beginning to end.

4 ahjummas coming together to fight crime and save their apartment complex

This drama 's first episode had biggest hook I have ever seen; I was instantly hooked from the very first episode, and as I expected, it turned out to be a fantastic show.

Plot**
The story follows four undervalued housewives who, in the eyes of their families, are merely housewives. They come together to solve mysteries and apprehend criminals. Miri, who has a traumatic past involving a serial killer and the loss of her best friend, works hard to support her husband, who causes various issues. She possesses a keen ability to notice details and piece them together, much like Sherlock Holmes, to solve cases. Gyeong Ja, an ex-detective with impressive physical strength, left her job to let her husband excel and now embraces the role of a housewife. So Hui, a diligent delivery woman, is an endless source of information. Finally, Ji Hyeon, who owns a neighborhood supermarket, has exceptional negotiation skills and talent for acting.

Though they are different, they are united by a shared desire to address problems within their apartment complex. They start with minor issues, like improperly separated garbage, but often uncover more serious crimes in the process. If you enjoy dramas about middle-aged women joining forces with elements of crime and mystery, akin to Sherlock Holmes-style investigations, then this is definitely the drama for you. It is not only enjoyable and funny but also heartwarming. The best part is, they have conformed for a second season, and i knew they would because this was such hit. .

Great first half, disappointing second

This drama took me by surprise—I was hooked from the very beginning. It offered a great blend of humour and mystery, and I quickly grew attached to the team. Watching them work together to solve cases was genuinely entertaining, and I appreciated getting glimpses into their backstories along the way.

I didn't mind that it shifted to a thriller where they tried to catch a serial killer, but it just wasn't done well. Unfortunately, the drama lost its momentum around the halfway mark. I started skipping more and more scenes, and some plot points became downright ridiculous. It's a real shame because the first half was genuinely great.

Verdict: A strong start with a fun team dynamic and engaging cases, but loses its way in the second half. Worth watching for the first half alone, but temper your expectations for the rest.

plot twis
