It's worth watching

Hi everyone! I’m currently on episode 4 of this drama, and I’m really enjoying it so far. Let me share some thoughts about the characters and my impressions:
The 1st sister is a young widow and comes across as level-headed and wise. She’s the type who stays quiet but speaks up when it truly matters, and I admire her poise.
The 2nd sister’s husband is definitely a bit of a Butt pain (yes, I said it!). He does seem younger than his wife, which adds an interesting dynamic to their relationship.
The 3rd sister (who I personally think is the female lead) is incredibly smart and seems to be the glue holding the family together. She’s shaping up to be one of my favorite characters.
The 4th sister is young but fierce—a true warrior at heart. She doesn’t hesitate to stand up for her family, and I love her bravery.
The 5th sister has a simpler style and doesn’t dress in fancy clothes, but she seems a bit unwell. I’m curious to see how her story unfolds.
The 6th sister enjoys being pampered and brings a lighter, more playful energy to the group.
Now, let’s talk about the male lead! Wang Xing Yue is one of my favorite actors, especially in love stories, and I’m thrilled to see him in this drama. He’s already delivering a strong performance. The other male characters haven’t played a significant role yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing how they add to the story.

Overall, I’m loving this drama so far and hoping it stays as good until the end. Fingers crossed it doesn’t disappoint!

Initial Thought: Chinese Pride and Prejudice

When I first started watching it, my first thought was that it reminds me of Pride and Prejudice (x Sense and Sensibility).

While very different, it does have a seemingly similar vein. A mother trying to get her daughters married to suitable suitors, and often comes across as money-minded. I felt like the 3rd Sister's story reminded me a bit of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy with their battle of wits, but I suppose in a way the 1st Sisters story was also a little bit like that.

It is a fun watch and I look forward to finishing the show.

I hope that one of the stories we get to see in the show is Qiong Nu's story and I hope the Li's find their long lost brother. I totally thought Qiong Nu was one of the Li Sisters, imagine my surprise!!

Story with strong FLs sabotaged by irredeemable men being presented as their romantic partners

I was very excited for this drama but have come out of it disappointed. However, I'm already seeing people blame the criticizers for "not understanding this is realism and in real life back then men were horrible." I LOVE historical chinese novels to the point I've machine translated hundreds of them (yes I'm addicted) and one of the prevailing themes is always how women's lives were horrible back then and the men largely neither prioritized nor saw women as their own people worthy of respect. They were meant to be obedient, sensible, virtuous, gentle, generous, and basically never show any dissatisfaction. Their lives were easily discarded or kept imprisoned or slaving away in the women's inner house, never living for themselves.

And so yes I UNDERSTAND that the men in this drama so far show the same tendencies and are rather realistic of their time, but that doesn't mean we, the viewers, have to like it for the romantic partners of our female leads. I know that there will likely be character growth for these men, but I don't really care. No amount of character growth will make me like the second sister's pathetic, cowardly, cheating husband who tormented her to the point she chewed her mouth bloody with pebbles to cope. No amount of character growth for that noble brother law of the emperor will make me like him simply by the virtue of the fact that he tried to seize a woman like she was property and make her his concubine, and had he succeeded he would have become a proponent of female slavery and martial rape. No amount of "misunderstanding" or reasoning will make me like the husband of the first sister who (spoiler from teaser) BEATS HIS WIFE TO THE POINT THERE'S BLOOD? There's no going back for me after they've already shown these parts of themselves. I don't believe in second chances for men who are like this. These are not "character flaws" you can come back from.

Maybe if the story was about them divorcing these so called "perfect matches" things would be different, but that's not how it's being presented.

The only one that I'm still on the fence for is the character played by Wang Xing Yue and that's because it does seem like there are some misunderstandings at play and it is true that he was "asked" to meddle in his cousin's affairs by his aunt and repeatedly by his cousin. It doesn't seem that he helped due to actually caring at first; the first time he helped it seemed he did it for the sake of the family's reputation and after that it was a matter of personal pride, competing with the third lady. That isn't enough of an excuse for me though; he knows how awful his cousin is and knows how he must be treating his wife for him to spiral like she does, but he still seemingly has no empathy for her. His advise is from the perspective of making things easier for his cousin, but never thinks of what his cousin's wife must be suffering. And yes, you can ask: why would he? The wife is no one to him. But that's where I think a lack of basic human empathy shines through and a lack of willingness to see the plight of women in this world. He is not an idiot, and he himself employs women in his business without having them resort to selling their bodies. He should know better.

Then there's the whole competing with the FL with their business. I get it. I get that his pride is wounded and that he's annoyed that the FL got one up on him by snatching his manager and painting. No one likes being tricked or taken advantage of. It also makes sense that he wouldn't just sit there and watch her steal his customers because that's his source of income. But again, I felt like there was a certain lack of empathy in how he employed methods. These are 5 girls and a widowed mother with barely any funds and nothing to rely on, trying to make a decent living. He knows this and he knows their difficulties, because he explains this to his mom when she's angry to calm her down. Yet he still was rather callous in how he dealt with them.
There's still room for hope in him toning down that arrogance and using some damn empathy, but what he's done has already left a sour taste in my mouth.

I don't expect men in historical dramas to be feminists. But it's a valid criticism when dealing with a drama centering around women, where the audience is largely modern day women. The writer isn't from the song dynasty, the writer is from the modern day era. The reason so many historical chinese novels get popular is because they promote modern values within the historical context and it's what makes the characters stand out. Some of the most popular fictional historical MLs are popular precisely because they are a breath of fresh air for their time. One of the reasons I loved Duke Su (past character of WXY) was because he supported women's wrongs lol! If I wanted to just watch shitty guys do shitty things, I would just go outside. When 3 of the MLs so far seem unbearable and the main one is precariously sitting on the fence, you know that the writer could have done a better job setting them up.

I am a big fan of Wang Xing Yue and was really looking forward to this drama so I'll give it a few more episodes, but yes as of now I'm rather disappointed. It sucks bc the chemistry between WXY and LYX is GREAT and they do have a lot of potential. I just can't get over this writing. I can maybe root for their pairing but every other pairing sucks big time.
The one positive thing I will say is that all the sisters are fantastic: strong, smart, brave, resourceful, hard working, survivors. They're working their asses off and they don't take mistreatment likely, but all the more reason why I think they deserve better. If you consider this drama as a story of 5 sisters doing whatever it takes to survive in a shitty world with shitty men surrounding them, sticking together and protecting each other, instead of a romance, then the drama might be worth your time.

Really wanted to like this, but having trouble

I'm trying to get into this drama. But I'm having a difficult time staying engaged and have stopped/started multiple times. The idea interested me because I saw some reviews mentioning it was like an Asian version of Pride and Prejudice. But while the acting is okay, I think the writing isn't as clever and isn't keeping me as engaged. And I don't feel the same feeling like I did watching Pride and Prejudice where you were cheering for the leads and really wanted to see them get together. And the leads don't really feel like leads although I do have respect for the actors who played them. I saw the ML in a couple other dramas, he impressed me with how young he was IRL, yet conveyed deep emotions and pulled off playing someone older. And the FL, I only saw her in Blossom in Adversity as a SFL. I actually liked her character in that series more than here. I think part of it is because she used her real voice in the other drama while she was dubbed here. Just my opinion, but after becoming familiar with an actor's real voice, it's always harder for me to get into a series when the actor is dubbed. I'm not sure if I will continue or not. I am taking a break and may start up again at some point.

Can't figure it out

I started watching this because of LYX and WYX. I loved LYX in "Love In The Clouds" and WXY in "Amidst A Snowstorm of Love" so them in one show should have been a winner right? Wrong.

I don't know what to make of this show. I think the entire cast has zero chemistry with one another. The sisters, the mom with her daughters, the couples, the brothers in law. Even WXY and his assistant MJ have zero chemistry and that master/sidekick dynamic is usually the funniest one! The actors individually were great it's just none of them meshed well at any point in the 12 episodes I've finished so I'm just going to drop this because it's not worth it.

Poorly executed ridiculous Pride and Prejudice

I couldn't make it through the first episode because the characters were so poorly done and shallow, it was revolting. There's the smart sister, the childish sister, the quiet one with the good memory and zero lines, the one that takes care of everyone and the married off one that is (by traditional standards) too willful. There's a scene where the married one gets scolded by her brother-in-law for not being tolerant of her husband cheating on her. Then two of the men decide to peek on the sisters by dressing like maids in the worst getup imaginable. Such a shame cause I like a bunch of the actors in this. Just go watch Pride and Prejudice instead because it's the same concept.

Perfect Match racconta la storia di una vedova che desidera sposare le sue cinque figlie. Il tono generale del drama lo rende interessante perché sovverte la classica struttura del drama sia come tono che come narrazione: illustrerà il percorso di conoscenza, innamoramento, matrimonio delle sorelle, una dopo l'altra in una rappresentazione lineare e ordinata (presentando i vari steps di unione in maniera sempre diversa). Ogni coppia ha il suo momento mantenendo sempre un ottimo ritmo.
Il drama inizia con la famiglia che si trasferisce a Bianjing per sfuggire a quegli sciacalli dei parenti ed è il luogo dove vive, sposata, la seconda sorella, Fuhui con l'immaturo marito Fan Lianghan, un ragazzo tanto buono quanto dispersivo e inconcludente. Il personaggio del marito è fondamentale per dare al lavoro un tono comico e leggero.

Il primo arco narrativo racconta il percorso di nozze della terza sorella, Kang Niang, con un uomo quasi perfetto Chai An, i quali si affronteranno a colpi di ingegno perché saranno avversari sul lavoro. Lui per me è il genero migliore umanamente, il più risolto, il più maturo e il più completo.
La coppia successiva è stata però la mia preferita, forse perché rispecchia in tutto e per tutto la classica storia da drama cinese storico: La figlia maggiore, Shouhua, la più talentuosa, ingegnosa e matura delle sorelle, nonché vedova da un precedente matrimonio, sposa, per accordi genitoriali, uno studioso di alto rango, Du Yang Xi, un orfano calcolatore, rigido, inflessibile; pieno di risentimento e propositi di vendetta si innamorerà suo malincuore della moglie dopo un colpo di fulmine tardivo, riservandole attenzioni e tenerezze, dimostrandole anche un sincero bisogno di calore e un notevole trasporto fisico.
Nel ventesimo episodio, il drama sposta l'attenzione sulla quarta sorella, Haode, e sul suo partner Shen Huishao. L'evoluzione del suo personaggio è la migliore e più marcata perché, nel tentativo di aiutare il marito nel proprio lavoro, si appassiona alla giurisdizione locale e trova un proprio posto nel mondo, mostrando maturità, aiuterà il marito nella propria evoluzione personale e lavorativa, consentendogli di superare alcuni blocchi emotivi di origine traumatica che lo avevano reso asettico e distaccato, un freddo "applicatore" di leggi senza coglierne sfumature o umanità.
Il focus successivo del drama è sulla figlia più giovane e quinta, Leshan, intorno all'episodio 28.
Il suo partner è Yang Xian, inizialmente nemico , presenta il tropo classico : nemici /amanti.
Questa storia mi è piaciuta più che per l'amore tra i due per l'affetto che Madam Li darà al genero riscattandolo dalla deprivazione affettiva della propria famiglia d'origine.

Perfect Match è un drama divertente che sovverte la struttura classica dei drama: è un drama assolutamente moderno per le dinamiche e per i caratteri dei personaggi, per l'intraprendenza femminile ( una delle sorelle corteggerà in un modo che non ho mai visto in tanti drama, anche coreani), per l'indipendenza di queste donne dalle figure maschili e per la linearità dei racconti. E' un lavoro che si immerge nelle dinamiche relazionali presentando del realismo nei conflitti, non ci saranno trame, sottotrame, sotterfugi, vendette eccessive e antagonisti ossessivi. E' molto ordinato nel presentare le storie e le evoluzioni, la scenografia è molto buona, la regia è di qualità, fattore di pregio del drama (non a caso il team regia è composto dal regista di LOST you forever e da due registi di the double), con i primi piani vividi che si concentrano su alcuni dettagli espressivi quali il taglio degli occhi, le espressioni, le smorfie delle bocche, molti effetti bokeh, con il chiaro proposito di connotare emotivamente i personaggi e permetterci di coglierne i vissuti e immedesimarci.
La musica di sottofondo è discreta, accompagna, addolcisce e rende poetica la narrazione senza diventare troppo forte e contrastare i dialoghi (problema riscontrato in molti lavori, tra cui il blasonato e sopravvalutato fangs of fortune) o senza proporsi ossessivamente come loop.
I personaggi sono dipinti in modo plausibile e credibile, il lavoro su di loro, sulle loro storie, sulle loro azioni e sui loro obiettivi è coerente e molto ben strutturato (anche questa è una falla che riscontro presto nei precedenti lavori).
Ho apprezzato le vivaci dinamiche familiari di Madam Li e delle sue figlie, per la prima volta ho visto una madre che si può chiamare tale, protettiva, materna, affettuosa e di buon cuore che accompagna figlie e generi nel percorso di vita.
I personaggi tra di loro non sono crudeli e per la prima volta ho visto una maternità ben gestita ed una famiglia che si vuole bene, sempre pronta a supportarsi ed aiutarsi, a venirsi incontro (la versione cinese delle piccole donne ambientata nella dinastia song), unita contro il mondo e disposta a sacrificarsi per difendersi dal mondo. Sempre fiera e dignitosa, comprensiva anche nei riguardi della chiassosa e veemente madre, a volte goffa e priva di buone maniere.
Le decisioni vengono concordate e discusse insieme, in famiglia, anche questo mi è piaciuto molto. Una famiglia priva di riferimenti maschili a cui non manca nulla.

Trucchi , costumi, oggetti di scena e parrucche, tutto è fedele e nell'utilizzo dei fiori come acconciature c'è un richiamo molto chiaro a Frida Khalo, anche nell'utilizzo dei colori, molto vividi e accesi che però sono scelti con cura in modo da rappresentare i caratteri e le personalità dei personaggi. Insomma, c'è molta cura e niente è lasciato al caso.
Non a caso è stato molto apprezzato ed è al terzo posto tra i drama più seguiti di sempre a livello internazionale.
Nessun personaggio della famiglia Li è completo : ognuno di loro è umanamente caratterizzato, con pregi e difetti; le coppie che si formano sono molto equilibrate, alcune simili, altre opposte ma complementari.

La prima coppia: intellettuali, ambiziosi e riflessivi, due artisti raffinati; nel privato lui è un marito elegante e coinvolto, un po' egoista e con un brutto risvolto a metà della serie ma non sarà mai distaccato o indifferente nei suoi riguardi; lei lo aiuta nel suo lavoro coltivando passioni artistiche che condividono insieme. Molto piccante anche una sua "realizzazione" artistica per la moglie dopo la prima notte insieme... .
La seconda coppia è formata dalla vivace, esuberante e intraprendente Fuhui che sposa un uomo altrettanto esuberante e rumoroso (fate caso ai loro vestiti, sono i più colorati e accesi). Lui è il più simpatico ma è anche un bimbo che si affida a lei quando compie marachelle, di buon cuore frena l'irruenza di lei. Peccato che si vivono davvero poco come coppia, solo nei primi episodi comprendiamo il genere di rapporto che hanno.
La terza coppia è composta da due persone simili: furbi, scaltri, decisi , manipolatori e calcolatori. Li ho apprezzati ma mi ha commosso più lui da solo che soffre per lei che il trasporto inesistente dell'attrice.
La quarta coppia è secondo me quella meglio strutturata, composta da due opposti: lei giovane, dolce, tenera, affabile, espansiva e affettuosa, si innamora di lui perché ne ammira la figura autoritaria e giusta a fronte dei numerosi torti subiti dalla famiglia. Lui rigido, coartato si riscoprirà dolcissimo con lei e imparerà dalla sua dolcezza ad ammorbidirsi, lei dalla sua saggezza invece ne ricaverà una maggiore riflessività e consapevolezza.
La quinta coppia è una via di mezzo tra similitudine e diversità: entrambi sono irruenti e vivaci, molto fisici e lui è anche incattivito dal trattamento ricevuto in famiglia e da deprivazioni affettive, lei lo doma e lo lega a sé con mezzi non proprio ortodossi o condivisibili ma spesso violenti ed eccessivi, umiliandolo se è il caso.
E' la storia meno sviluppata perché non viene mostrato come diventa la loro relazione, come la gestiscono, come si vivono, inoltre è la più sgradevole di tutti come risvolti: prima viene mostrato un modello di famiglia e lei si pone in un determinato modo con i cognati e con questo cognato in particolare perché ha una famiglia particolare alle spalle, in seguito a intrighi imperiali perderanno tutti e la famiglia, tra cui madame Li, lo metteranno alla prova voltandogli le spallE.
Questo risvolto contravviene a tutto quanto è stato finora mostrato e visto sul valore della famiglia e sull'ingiustizia dei trattamenti, il primo cognato agirà molto peggio nei confronti della moglie e la famiglia non agirà in modo così sprezzante anzi la suocera accomodante e quasi contenta al suo ritorno presuntuoso.

Ma Perfect Match non riguarda solo i matrimoni delle cinque figlie di Madam Li. C'è un tema di fondo : il genere e le relative aspettative sociali. Descrive il trattamento delle donne nella dinastia Song. Madame Li come vedova perse proprietà e status quando suo marito morì. I casi giudiziari affrontano alcuni dei pregiudizi contro le donne dell'epoca. La storia di ogni figlia descrive le sfide di realizzazione e gestione matrimoniale.
La storia d'amore resiste a incomprensioni e circostanze contrastanti. L'uso dell'umorismo e la battaglia di ingegni rendono questo dramma un caldo concentrato di fascino.
Altro aspetto divertente e molto accattivante è l'alleanza che questi cognati formano per aiutare le mogli e per conciliarsi quando hanno litigi matrimoniali. Ogni volta che ci sarà un problema la lega dei cognati sarà pronta a intervenire per consigliare e se è il caso imporre una strategia di superamento del problema. Formeranno addirittura un clan separato il cui ingresso è determinato da superamento di prove per dimostrare abilità e talenti. Delizioso, davvero.
La genialità di questo lavoro è nell'aver narrato uno storico in modo moderno che attualizza un po' i problemi che ci sono sempre stati, che sono comuni da quando esiste l'uomo e forse esistono a causa dell'uomo in quanto tale.


DATI : la traduzione italiana, netflix ha davvero cannato questa volta, non ho mai seguito un lavoro con sottotitoli così scadenti,
Gli ultimi 4 episodi sono davvero brutti, crollano tutti gli ideali e la forza di questa famiglia, salvo solo una sorpresa imprevista che ci sarà nel penultimo episodio, poi la famiglia si dimostrerà sprezzante e coalizzata contro il quinto cognato che affronta un momento di enorme difficoltà ma aveva superato le sfide. Invece di stringersi e supportarlo, con la scusa di farlo crescere lo porranno di fronte ad un allontanamento forzato e lo maltratteranno al suo ritorno (per giunta!). L'enorme discrepanza di trattamento mi ha disgustato e mi sono chiesa cosa avessi visto finora! Ho abbassato di poco la mia valutazione ma mi ha guastato un lavoro credetemi.
Il superamento delle difficoltà e la riunione è frettolosa e improvvisa, non viene mostrato nessun avvicinamento o abbraccio, nessun trasporto nel ritrovarsi, solo la promessa di nuove violenze, lei col mattarello persino dopo il matrimonio. UNO SCHIFO!
Un'altra cosa che non ho apprezzato è che a parte due storie le altre devono affrontare prove decisive per il loro matrimonio, e alcune saranno davvero pesanti da digerire. Non c'era motivo di proporre 3 matrimoni in questo modo, sarebbe stato molto più bello vederli alleati contro il comune nemico.
La trama è interessante e la dinamica familiare e il tono del drama sono unici. L'atmosfera generale di Perfect Match ti lascia una sensazione di calore e intimità.
Finale fiacco e affrettato (esclusi gli ultimi 90 secondi).
