Takagi Yohei, who works as a reporter for a weekly magazine, boarded a ferry from Osaka port to Beppu. There, he encountered Funakoshi Hirokatsu, whom he had previously met during an assignment, and the two got caught in a conversation. During their talk, a woman with a black hat pulled low over her face, who was with Funakoshi, discreetly left the scene. When the ferry arrived at Beppu port, Funakoshi's strangled body was discovered in a cabin, and Takagi starts to investigate the mysterious woman wearing a black hat.
