Ugh. So sick of show attempts to make us feel sorry for the psycho.

It's such a tired, over-used plot device where C-Dramas spend all this screen time giving us the maudlin, sad sob-story history behind some psychopathic unrequited love interest, as if to make us feel sorry for him (or her). I absolutely hate this trope because it is so disingenuous. In almost every case whatever trauma they have endured is nothing compared to that which millions of others have endured and yet THEY didn't turn into obsessed psychopaths. So it completely fails as an excuse for their behavior. And even in the (rare) c-drama cases where the character goes through redemption and turns into someone who isn't a villain and maybe even helpful, it's just not that interesting because we _know_ that this character is NOT going to end up with the lead and so it all feels like a giant waste of screen time. Love triangles in general are almost always nothing but a plot drag. All that said, Jeremy Xu is doing a masterful job of playing a creep. He's being so good at this role in this show that I think I need to go watch one of his dramas again where he played a sincerely good guy just to wash this icky feeling away. Time to rewatch Legend of the Phoenix.

Compassion for Changqing's story

Well, this took a weird turn. As if Xihe had too few suitors as it is! 😳😮‍💨 But I do wonder who the man in the hooded cape was... his voice sounded familiar. Maybe this is some trick to frame that guy who wants to marry Xihe so that he is rejected from marrying any princess? 🤔I can't with Changqing... Despite how much I want to dislike the man, his story is making me feel sad for him and even pity him. I kind of hope that now, when he's surer than ever that Xihe is Qingzhi, after her words about what she wanted from their marriage instead of what she got, he will choose to protect her from the sidelines and not act on his one-sided love/obsession for her. That would be a great redemption arc for his character. 😔🤔Cui is becoming more and more shameless when it comes to Lin, taking all the tricks right out of Huayong's playbook... 🤭 But I am not complaining. I could watch them all day long. 😏

Prince Xin: a misguided and tragic good guy?

I'm glad I got what I'm curious about: back story into Xin Wang.

My finger crossed that he is an actual good guy who loved and cared about his wife the entire time. Maybe he'll turn bad or go mad later because of his obsession for her? I hope it won't be the case even though it seems kind of likely because of plot holes and cliche. Sigh.

I just realised, the characters I'm drawn to in this series all have something in common: expressions and emotions. They make me feel things. They seem human. Except the FL. But I do see this type of people in the real world too.

Testing fate

That whole Gu memorial visit was surreal. That had to feel weird offering incense to your own memorial followed by the crazy ex testing you with poisoning himself. She has clarified it as much as she can that while she had no feelings for him, she knew he would do anything for her and wished him to live well. It is not likely he will heed this sound advice but we can only hope. That was a sad irony that his efforts to save her cost her her family. It is funny that Shulin had to be told to wash her hands like a schoolboy before getting her hands on the pastries. 🤣The princess again runs into the Crown Prince at her family New Year celebration. He even managed to twist her arm hard enough to give him a pity knot.🤣Traveling home her ex again makes his presence known. The waterfall fireworks were quite beautiful, but his refusal to let go is more than obssessive. The Crown Prince had his own fireworks display that reminded me of the winter flowering trees . His outstretched arms played right in her hands as she asked his sibling how did he stand a chance for the throne with a crown prince like that? He is relentless in his pursuit of her. Shulin has a shock when she runs into her new house guest….Minister Cui🤣😂 Whether true or no he claimed to not get along with his younger brother and deemed bad fortune. So he asked the Emperor to reside in the Bu household. Can’t defy the Emperor now can we? 🤣😂He has already made breakfast plans and looks like he is being his entire house along with him. 🤣😂👏🏻The Crown Prince has rubbed off on him.🤣It segues to het another palace intrigue as a new marriage alliance is in the works and nobody wants to move that far away. A princess is bribed by one seeking to steal the bride of the crown prince and make her his own. She doesn’t want to be forced into a. Alliance so she agrees to the plan. She is drugged and waiting for the kidnapper when the episode ends. It is not shown who the hooded man was that was mastermind behind this action.
