Acting - I have to say totally impressed by Chen Zheyuan’s portrayal as Emperor. He conveys a lot with just his eyes. A face that handsome and with such a confident steady performance, it’s unbelievable that it’s his first time acting as an emperor!! A veteran level acting. Wu Jinyan is also perfect with her known charm as in her previous hit dramas. The ministers and close officials are also really done their job well.
The main actors are gift for directors who like to take close up shots. Court room scenes are so majestic and realistic. This drama has close to real life cinematography. Less filters and more natural colors. Very easy on eyes.

A Headache in Motion
I like both actors, but I struggled through four episodes before finally dropping it because it literally gave me a headache.Apparently, storytelling has become optional, and unfortunately that seems to be the latest trend. This is yet another cliché drama that mistakes style for substance, prioritizing visuals over storytelling. Yet the visuals aren't striking at all, quite the contrary. The short scenes, constant cuts, rapid editing, endless camera movement, and relentless visual changes created nothing but visual fatigue. The editing is fragmented, the pacing frantic, and the scenes are illogical and unrealistic. Of course, we also get another female lead who can apparently do everything except be believable.
As if that weren't enough, another trend in recent Chinese dramas is loud background music that plays almost continuously, is mixed so prominently that it competes with the dialogue, and soon becomes exhausting. Apparently, every emotion now requires an orchestra, and every conversation needs a soundtrack.
I like both actors individually, but I didn't think they suited these roles together. She looked a little too old for the character, while he had too much of a puppy-faced, youthful appearance for his role.
I'll leave this cinematic rollercoaster to viewers with stronger eyes, a higher tolerance for nonstop editing, and perhaps faster reflexes than mine.

A Promising Royal story that Shines From the Start
After watching the first four episodes, Royal Betrothal has made a strong first impression. The story moves at a steady pace, introducing the main characters and their relationships without feeling rushed. The mix of royal politics, romance, and lighthearted moments keeps every episode engaging and leaves you wanting more.The biggest highlight so far is the performance of the two main leads. They bring their characters to life with natural and expressive acting, making every interaction feel believable. Their chemistry is effortless, and even in the early episodes, they create emotional moments that are easy to connect with. Their screen presence adds so much charm to the drama and makes it enjoyable to watch.
The production quality is another standout. The costumes, cinematography, and overall visuals fit the historical setting beautifully, while the soundtrack complements the emotional and romantic scenes well.
Although it's still too early to judge the overall story with only four episodes released, Royal Betrothal has had a very promising start. If the drama continues at this level, it has the potential to become one of the most enjoyable historical romances of the season. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story and the relationship between the leads develop in the coming episodes.

AI intro, bad CGI, no chemistry
Struggling 😂 The story sounds promising, but the editing and directing are a little too much for me. So many close-ups, random tonal changes. Ai intro. Some bad cgi scenes. Don’t feel the chemistry between main leads.Also feel the costumes and overall production look cheaper than expected, with a few saying it resembles a low-budget mini-drama

Finally, a historical drama where duty matters more than romance.
An increasing number of period C-dramas these days are beginning to explore adulthood, responsibility, and relationships from a far more mature perspective. Royal Betrothal appears to be one of them.The first three episodes present a familiar premise: an emperor who wishes to rule with justice and integrity but finds himself constrained by corrupt ministers who wield far greater influence than they should. Following him is our Female lead whose life he once saved. Bound by gratitude, she is willing to devote herself—and even sacrifice her life—to help him realize his vision.
What’s different, is that both leads are driven by duty rather than romance, making every interaction feel purposeful instead of manufactured.
Wu Jin Yan is perfectly cast as a clever, calculating official who is unafraid to bend the rules in pursuit of her goal. It's a role that plays to her strengths and builds naturally on the intelligent, resilient characters she has portrayed before in Kill me, Love me and The Double.
Chen Zhe Yuan is equally impressive as a ruthless, cunning emperor who projects strength and authority while quietly carrying a silent desire to improve the lives of his people. Having previously watched him in Hidden Love, the contrast between the two performances is remarkable. He is completely convincing in both roles, demonstrating an impressive range as an actor.
It's an interesting plot, and I'm looking forward to seeing how their journey unfolds.If the series maintains this balance between political intrigue and mature character development, this could be one of the drama’s worth following.

Another one of those shows
This show just like POJ and most of the other recent shows tries to fully focus on the visuals.Even tho they fail miserably because everything looks fake and filtered to the MAX.
The desert scene looked hella bad and even the props look super cheap.
FLs visuals cant keep up with the MLs. Both are mediocre actors.
Same old storyline - one characters is a noble and the other had nothing and made a name for herself - literally the basis of every story at this point. One person is a green flag, the other a red flag. One will be used by the other and the other will just smile and accept.
Can we come up with something new? Like just a tiny bit? 10% new stuff?

Worst Cdrama I have watched. Acting bad for both leads. Story -directing bad too
I couldn’t get past episode 4. I felt embarrassed for the actors it was so bad. The FL was the worst. story was stupid. Male lead seemed embarrassed since he is good in his other dramas. Also Fl looked much older than ML.. as the series progressed it kept getting worse. In one scene the FL was drunk and kept pouring wine on herself as she kept lurching in circles and then fell. Esta serie es tan pésima que tuve que escribir esta reseña para sacarlo de mi sistema!!!Un emperador que no manda, nadie le respeta, lo contradicen abiertamente y sus órdenes valen menos que las de los plebellos.
Una mujer sobreactuada, violenta, energúmena, falsa, mentirosa, egoísta, a quien nadie le importa más que ella misma.
Una relación que es más fría que un trozo de hielo.
Cero empatía, muchas muertes sin sentido, una trama absurda y ridícula hasta el hartazgo!!
Me obligué a verla hasta el final para comprobar que sería tan mala al comienzo como al final.
No se la recomiendo a nadie!! Sólo apta si te gustan las series absurdas, ridículas y sin sentido.

Royal Betrothal: Brillante nella politica, affondato nel finale
Ero davvero in trepidazione per l’uscita di questo drama. I primi trailer mi avevano colpita subito, ma conoscendo i tempi imprevedibili dei C-drama non ci contavo troppo. Poi, come un fulmine a ciel sereno in un caldo giorno di luglio, Mango TV ce lo propone all’improvviso sul catalogo: niente promozione, zero marketing, quasi volessero farlo passare in sordina e nel silenzio più totale. E invece bastano i primi episodi per rimanere del tutto agganciati.I Punti di Forza: Protagonisti lucidi e un’intesa oltre la solita romance
Il vero cuore del drama sono Meng Tinghui e l'Imperatore Ying Gua.
•Lei è una forza della natura: resiliente, intelligente e capace di rialzarsi più forte dopo ogni avversità che la vita le riserva. Ha un percorso bellissimo: da orfana di strada e vittima dei trafficanti fino a diventare studiosa e poi ministro. Si è fatta da sola con una forza di volontà incrollabile, senza mai risultare arrogante se non quando la situazione lo richideva davvero.
•L'Imperatore rompe gli schemi: non è il classico sovrano passivo sul trono. È in prima linea a sventare intrighi, risolvere casi e mettere alle strette i suoi stessi ministri.
La loro non è la solita storia d’amore fatta di grandi gesta o dichiarazioni plateali. È un legame nato prima di tutto sul rispetto, sulla fiducia e su una profonda intesa lavorativa come ministro e sovrano, per poi evolversi nella complicità tipica di una coppia affiatata. Mancano scene romantiche appariscenti? Forse sì, ma le poche presenti ripagano l'attesa e sono perfette per la natura dei personaggi: il loro è un sentimento proibito che non può vivere alla luce del sole, ed è qui che la recitazione di Chen Zhe Yuan e Wu Jinyan fa la differenza. Gli basta un'occhiata per capirsi e trasmettere ogni sfumatura.
Anche il cast di supporto regala grandi soddisfazioni:
•Yan Fu Zhi: l'amica che tutte vorremmo. Schietta, mai giudicante, una presenza preziosa che aiuta la protagonista ad aprire gli occhi sui suoi veri sentimenti.
•Shen Zhi Li: la dimostrazione che anche nascendo privilegiate si può voler costruire la propria strada con le proprie forze. La dinamica di sorellanza tra le tre donne è splendida e le permette di rialzarsi anche dopo una scelta sbagliata.
•Shen Zhi Shu e Di Nian: partono come due ragazzi in ruoli troppo grandi per loro e finiscono per diventare, insieme all'imperatore, gli uomini che cambieranno le sorti del regno.
•Menzione d'onore per Huang Bo: la guardia dell'imperatore parla poco ed è un uomo semplice, ma quando muore a metà drama per salvare l'imperatore e Meng Tinghui è impossibile non commuoversi. Ti chiedi davvero perché le persone buone debbano fare questa fine mentre i malvagi restano impuniti.
I Villain: Scontro generazionale e vendette spietate
Anche la gestione degli antagonisti funziona molto bene:
•Xu Ting (Ministro di Sinistra): non è il classico cattivo, ma rappresenta il "vecchio" che si scontra con il "nuovo" portato dall'imperatore. Lo scontro generazionale e politico con il sovrano è viscerale, ma la sua presa di coscienza prima di morire dà un senso compiuto al personaggio.
•Gu Qin (Ministro di Destra): viscido, avido e disposto a sacrificare chiunque (fratellastro, moglie e popolo). La sua fine patetica è la degna conclusione di un'esistenza meschina.
•Yin Qing (Il vero Villain): parte come uno studioso di medicina solare e cordiale per poi rivelare la sua vera natura a capo della Congrega della Luna Rossa. Le sue motivazioni sono legittime, lo sterminio della sua famiglia e la schiavitù del suo popolo da parte del vecchio imperatore, ma per portare a termine la vendetta passa sui cadaveri di tutti, compresi i suoi stessi amici. Applica il classico "il fine giustifica i mezzi", motivo per cui la sua morte mi ha lasciata del tutto indifferente: per personaggi del genere non ci può essere redenzione.
I Problemi: Un montaggio lacunoso e un finale incomprensibile
E qui arriviamo alle note dolenti che impediscono al drama di essere un capolavoro: i tagli e la gestione del blocco finale.
Per tutta la serie ci si imbatte in un montaggio discontinuo. Salti di scena improvvisi, passaggi di trama in cui si conosce l'inizio e la conclusione di un evento ma non ciò che è avvenuto nel mezzo, ed evidenti errori di continuità con i costumi dei personaggi che cambiano da un'inquadratura all'altra. Se durante lo svolgimento della storia si tende a sorvolare, nel finale la situazione diventa inaccettabile.
Fatti e rivelazioni cruciali vengono liquidati in modo frettoloso:
•L'identità di Meng Tinghui: scoprire che è la principessa perduta di Zhongwa è un punto di svolta enorme, ma la sua evoluzione viene gestita male. Passa dal rimanere fedele all'imperatore al fuggire improvvisamente con Yin Qing nel giro di cinque minuti. Manca completamente la sua presa di coscienza sulla sofferenza del suo popolo.
•La morte di Yin Qing: lui si sacrifica per farla tornare da eroina nel Grande Ning e lei lo piange chiamandolo con il suo vero nome, creando una scena del tutto fuori contesto. Perché piangere così disperatamente per una persona che ricordava a malapena?
•La morte di Di Nian: troppo veloce e affrettata, finisce per sembrare una scelta forzata anziché un passaggio coerente con la narrazione.
Ma il punto più debole sono gli ultimi dieci minuti. Meng Tinghui, dopo tutto quello che ha conquistato lottando con le unghie e con i denti, lascia una lettera e scompare nel nulla, abbandonando gli amici e l'imperatore. È una scelta del tutto incoerente con il personaggio. Per tutto il drama ci hanno mostrato figure con una mentalità moderna calata in un contesto antico: l'evoluzione naturale doveva vederla diventare imperatrice e governare al fianco di Ying Gua per soppiantare definitivamente le vecchie regole. Vederla invece rinunciare a tutto per aprire una scuola non ha alcun senso.
E la scena finale? Lui che la raggiunge, cavalcano nel deserto, le chiede se vuole affrontare altre tempeste insieme a lui e poi... sigla? Ci troviamo davanti a uno dei finali aperti peggiori di sempre, secondo forse solo a quello di My Journey to You.
In Conclusione
Royal Betrothal resta comunque un drama da 7,5. È una visione assolutamente consigliata per chi predilige la suspense politica rispetto alla solita romance, per chi cerca un'estetica naturale senza i fastidiosi filtri leviganti e per chi vuole godersi le interpretazioni straordinarie dei due protagonisti. Peccato solo per quel finale visibilmente tagliato che lascia l'amaro in bocca.

L'arrogance et la suffisance…
Je ne connais pas la fin originale (n'ayant pas lu le roman), mais il ne fait aucun doute qu'elle doit être meilleure que celle-ci. À partir de l'épisode 20, ce drama n'a cessé de me contrarier. Je ne voulais pas totalement l'abandonner, devenue entre-temps supportrice de Shen Zhi Shu et Yan Fu Zhi, mais vu la finalité de toutes les intrigues…Meng Ting Hui ne fait preuve d'aucune humilité et reste dans une flaque de suffisance et de condescendance. Elle n'a rien d'une fonctionnaire rusée et n'a que peu de respect pour la justice qu'elle prône défendre. Son statut devrait la pousser à reconsidérer ses agissements, mais cela n'arrive jamais. Ses ambitions la dépassent, mais étant l'héroïne, elle obtient toujours gain de cause. La plupart des intrigues n'ont pour but que de flatter son égo ou de lui donner le bon rôle, tout en étant sauvée in extremis par l'Empereur. Mérite-elle les sacrifices de tout le monde ? Non. Ça faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas vu un personnage aussi indigne de son statut. Wu Jin Yan est une bonne actrice, cela dit, son personnage est fade, inintéressant et d'une fierté déplacée.
Ying Gua est un homme intelligent et intègre avec une belle ouverture d'esprit. Il ne se laisse pas aveugler par l'amour et reste conscient de ce qui l'entoure. Cependant, est-il vraiment un Empereur respecté ? Ou un simple pion dirigé par ses ministres ? Parfois, il donnait l'impression de maîtriser la partie, pour perdre la face la seconde suivante. Chen Zhe Yuan est un acteur formidable et talentueux, mais étonnamment, ici, je ne suis pas convaincue. Pour moi, il manque cette aura, cette prestance propre à un Empereur.
Leur romance est quelconque pour moi. Je n'y croyais pas, et je n'ai pas fait l'effort d'y croire. Comme mentionné ci-dessus, mon attention romantique s'est attachée à Yan Fu Zhi et Shen Zhi Shu. Avant que l'histoire ne décide de torturer bêtement tout le monde. Humpf !
Les histoires de femmes fortes sont une tendance qui perdure, mais qui s'effrite salement ces dernières années. Prôner des femmes fortes ? D'accord, mais elles doivent aussi être insipides, car dénuées d'émotions. Évidemment, l'émotion et la force ne peuvent aller de pair. La nuance n'existe plus, ou on préfère dépeindre l'émotion comme une faiblesse ?
En bref, Royal Betrothal est décevant, à l'exception de ses décors.

Dramanya tidak terlalu banyak filter percantik, justru memakai pendekatan seperti film yang memfokuskan kealamian dari artis dan set. Serta penangkapan kamera yang baik untuk detail emosi dan ekspresi.
