The story takes place in the mid-Qing Dynasty. Jin Shi Yi is a solitary wanderer born into a chaotic era — a figure both righteous and wicked, known in the martial world as the "Mad Beggar with Poison Hands." Navigating the ever-shifting world of martial arts, he witnesses betrayals and bloodshed, finds himself entangled in court intrigues, and gets swept up in a major conflict between the demonic sects and the orthodox martial alliance. At the story’s outset, Emperor Shen Zong of the Ming Dynasty, in a bid to consolidate power and avenge his father, Emperor Wu Zong, begins persecuting martial artists. He schemes to incite strife within the martial world on the day when Tang Xiao Lan is to pass on her title as leader of the Martial Alliance. Jin Shi Yi sees through the emperor’s plot and attempts to warn Tang, but she, unwilling to provoke chaos in the martial world or anger the emperor, ignores his warning. Acting on his own, he challenges both righteous and evil factions alike, setting off a relentless cycle of feuds and vendettas in the jianghu.
