Rare Short Drama Gem!

When I saw this in WeTV, with the title, I honestly thought it was a drama about rival gangs. lol. I didn't search or read anything about it before watching, so I was waiting for our gangster ML to grace the screen. I'm glad I gave this drama a shot, though. It was really beautifully made. I understand the sentiment that this should have been a mainstream drama with 40+ minutes per episode, but I think it's just right since it freed up time for less angst and unnecessary misunderstandings. It went straight to the point. I even purchased the express package so I can finish the last 2 episodes, since I already binged-watched it.

One thing that stood out for me was the business side of the drama. I understand CEO tropes have been overused, but this one actually worked by showing how our ML started from the bottom and worked his way up. It's realistic, too, since most young billionaires right now got big thanks to technology and have their own tech companies.

The villains in this drama are so well-made. I love how they had their own karma in the end. Shen Hao was the perfect example of a rotten, spoiled rich kid who had grown accustomed to getting whatever he wanted. On the ending part where he got crazy.. lol. It really looked like he lost his mind.

The side characters, especially the best friends and the grandfather, also stood out. I love how they were so supportive of our couple and helped them through. At first, I was disappointed, thinking how Shen Gu actually doesn't appreciate Fang Hong Sheng that much, but then the show tells us that he has been grateful to him all along.

Of course, our MAIN COUPLE! Dang, how pretty they both look on screen. Our FL looks a lot like Kim Ji Won, and it's amazing how you would really believe that she IS THE CEO with how she carries herself onscreen. It's rare to see a CEO husband and wife in dramas, and in this one, our FL is a working, smart, and sassy CEO wife. Their chemistry is amazing too! It looks like censorship isn't really too big with short dramas, so there are no curtains, mirrors, etc to block the kissy scenes on this one. I loved how smitten he is with her and how they help each other in life and in business.

The republican era was really well made, but tragic. I'm glad they made a past-future parallel scene at the end, showing a "What-if" moment in which they didn't die and republican Shen Gu actually received Lin Qu's letter about them getting married when she got back. They might not have gotten their happy ending in their past life, but thankfully, the present them did.

Short dramas are usually over the top with ridiculous plots, and as long as there is sizzling chemistry, who needs a story, right? But there are rare ones where the story, characters, and actors are done right, and this is definitely one of them. So go ahead and take time to watch! This is a rare gem of short dramas!

A story too big for such short episodes

I genuinely liked this drama more than I expected to. For such a short format, it manages to fit in so many elements, family drama, business conflicts, conspiracies, romance, and even connections tied to the past, without ever becoming boring. Honestly, it just made me wish it had been a full-length drama because the story had enough potential for something much bigger. The chemistry between the leads is probably what kept me the most invested, every scene between them had energy and made the emotional side of the story work really well. I also enjoyed going into it without knowing too much because some twists and tropes actually surprised me. And honestly, the reference to the Republican era was such a plus for me, that kind of connection to a past love story instantly adds something more emotional and intriguing to the narrative. The acting was solid from both leads, even if Wan Xin frustrated me sometimes with how clueless she could be despite everything Shen Gu was doing for her. Still, I had a really good time watching this, and even with the rushed pacing that comes with short dramas, it never lost my attention.

Just watch it!!

This is a well-written and beautifully executed mini-drama. This cannot be lumped in the same category as those half-baked mini-dramas out there. That will be an insult to Echoes of Gang City.

The acting of the characters is superb. As they say, the window into a person's soul is the eyes. Simply wonderful! I love me some loyal, resourceful and highly reliable friends. Goodness me, I am so done with backstabbing friends in mini-dramas. It's such a joy to see them actually stand together through thick and thin. God bless Grandpa's heart. You can totally feel the joy he felt seeing them get together in the modern times.

Despite there being only one soundtrack, it wasn't abused. It was well-timed, not loud and adds layers of emotion to the scenes. It was also nice that the business side of the drama didn't get lost halfway through the drama; instead, it was fleshed out to give some actual context.

The story is also not simply about revenge, protecting the family business, or romance. Yes, all of those were incorporated, but personally, I think those flashbacks to the Republican Era added so much depth to the present and elevated the story. If I must mention a drawback, it's the use of English every now and then. I don't mind it, but drafting contracts in English or sharing reports in English to a group of men in suits at a board meeting that primarily communicates Mandarin is kinda pushing it lol!! And also, casually switching to English when all the discussions in the same scene were held in Mandarin.... is yeah lol!!

Another favourite part of the show is the shooting location. Some of the shots were in Hong Kong, which made me happy lol!! Especially in the last episode, that's West Kowloon Park!! I feel like I can connect with the show more because of the sense of familiarity.

Anyways, just watch it and enjoy!! You might need some tissues, not a whole box.

When Familiar Tropes Are Done Right

This is a well-written business romance with good actors, solid production values, and strong execution. One thing I particularly appreciated was that the drama resisted the urge to add unnecessary comedy. Instead, it stayed focused on being a serious business romance, which worked very well for the story it wanted to tell.

For a short drama, it delivers an enjoyable binge-watch experience. The main couple is convincing and natural together, and their chemistry carries much of the show. The supporting cast is also strong, but the actors portraying the grandfather in both timelines deserve special mention. They left a lasting impression.

This drama somehow manages to gather almost every cliché commonly found in short dramas, yet it still works because those tropes are executed well. Sometimes familiar stories can be enjoyable when they're handled with care, and that's exactly the case here.

One of my favorite aspects was the friendship between the male lead and his best friend. They were both charismatic, good-looking, and genuinely fun to watch whenever they shared scenes. The young actor in the Republican Era storyline also stood out with a very impressive performance.

The business side of the drama was another pleasant surprise. CEO stories have become incredibly common, but this one made the concept feel more believable by showing how the male lead built his success from the ground up. It felt realistic, especially in today's world where many young billionaires have achieved success through technology and entrepreneurship.

The villains were also surprisingly well-developed. Their eventual downfall felt earned, and Shen Hao in particular was a convincing portrayal of a spoiled rich heir who had spent his entire life getting whatever he wanted. His descent into madness near the end was both entertaining and believable.

I also loved the supporting characters, especially the best friends and the grandfather. They were supportive, loyal, and genuinely cared about the main couple. It was refreshing to see friends who stood by each other rather than constantly betraying one another. At one point, I worried that Shen Gu didn't truly appreciate Fang Hong Sheng, but the story eventually showed that he had always been grateful to him.

And of course, the main couple deserves praise. They looked fantastic together on screen, and the female lead carried herself with the confidence and authority of a true CEO. It's rare to see a drama where both husband and wife are successful business leaders, and I enjoyed watching a smart, capable, and independent CEO wife. Their chemistry was excellent, and they supported each other both personally and professionally throughout the story.

The Republican Era storyline was beautifully done, although undeniably tragic. I especially appreciated the parallel scene near the end that gave viewers a glimpse of a "what if" scenario where they survived and were able to receive their long-awaited happy ending. They may not have found happiness in their past lives, but seeing their modern counterparts get that chance felt satisfying.

Overall, this is a beautifully executed mini-drama that stands well above many of the rushed and poorly developed short dramas in the genre. The acting is consistently strong, with the cast conveying emotions remarkably well through subtle expressions and eye acting. The loyal friendships, supportive family members, and heartfelt relationships gave the story a warmth that many mini-dramas lack.

That said, I did lose some interest toward the final stretch, which prevented me from rating it even higher. Still, it remains a solid and enjoyable short drama that I would happily recommend.

This deserves to be a full drama

With how complex the story is, this drama deserves to be a full on 45-minute-per-episode drama.
I watched this without knowing the whole plot so some tropes surprised me. Acting from both leads are nice. They are both good looking, although the FL’s character could be very clueless at times. Like, girl, the ML has saved you numerous times and you’re still wondering whether he liked you or not.

But I’m still intrigued to see how this would end.

another gem

so this drama was actually sooo good!!?!
first of all the male lead is the GREENEST flag in mini drama land. like he’s actually so green my eyes hurt😭😭 the mains’ relationship is so beautiful i loved their chemistry so much. the male lead’s team were amazing characters! also the female lead’s bestie is so cool she’s such a baddie 😋 the plot is a cliche revenge story except we have a little Republican era connection. it was executed really well tho, nothing special, but all the scenes were well made and all interactions were interesting! if you’re looking for something spicy I don’t think this is your drama, because there are a few kisses, yes, but this is not your typical „ no plot just lust “ short drama, this one is actually pretty wholesome! 🥰🤍 i really recommend watching it!

Mini drama rasa long drama..

I love this drama ❤️❤️
Buat ku episodenya terlalu kurang pengen mereka collab lagi.

Sayang bgt plot ceritanya kurang di explore. Padahal cast nya bagus bgt chemistry nya.
