In a community in Chiang Rai that still faithfully preserves traditional Lanna customs, when someone passes away, the deceased's family contacts a small village workshop that specializes in building funeral pyres. The skilled craftsmen work to construct a pyre from wood, paper, and fabric, spending days meticulously crafting each piece with the same care and attention as if building a resting place for their own family member, ensuring the deceased departs with dignity and respect. Once deeply rooted in traditional rites, the community has now begun to question and experiment with new possibilities—rituals that reflect personal dreams, identities, and ways of life.
