Currently Watching:
My Unfortunate Boyfriend

Are you tired of melodramas? Are you a comedy fan, who thinks we should laugh at the whole world? Do you want to watch something stupid and ridiculous? Or are you a No Min Woo fan? Then this drama is just for you! Before this series started, I hadn’t even heard about it. After seeing My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, I started following No Min Woo on Instagram. He spammed a lot of scenes and pictures about this drama, and that’s why I became interested. He uploaded so many idiotic scenes that I was like: “What the hell is this? XD”.

When I first saw the poster it didn't arouse my interest, but when I saw some video scenes I realized this drama is just as hilarious and as easy as I like! The humor of this drama can be called "clumsy humor” because we get what the title says to us. It has a lot of jokes based on misunderstandings, coincidences, and awkwardness. But I’ll say more about it. So let’s start.

Our main character is Yoo Ji Na, the countryside girl, who goes to the city to get a good-paying job at a marketing company. Despite her not so prestigious school, she goes to an interview at one of the most well known companies called IM Creative Media Group. Before she even enters the building, her fate is decided by meeting the young gardener, Yoon Tae Woon, who shovels dirt on her shoes.

At the bathroom, while Ji Na cleans her shoes, an ahjumma tells her the boy’s nickname is Mr. Unfortunate, because nothing good happens around him and anyone who meets him also becomes unfortunate. At the middle of the applicant’s interview session, they all get random boxes, which contain an item they should make a marketing plan for. Our Ji Na get’s the spoon.

While everyone else is doing PPTs and real marketing plans, our girl is more creative and starts to shoot a quick short commercial with the employees of the company, including the sexy gardener - Mr. Unfortunate.

The commercial wins the young and handsome boss Hee Chul’s heart, but Unfortunately (see? :D) a spider appears on the desk of the employers. Our Ji Na kills it without even hesitating which has 2 very important effects on her career.

First, the spider get smashed on the CW of Ji Na whereupon the boss can’t read only the half of the name of her school, and he misunderstood it as the Hangkuk University (which is the most prestigious school in South Korea)

The second effect is that, as soon as she kills it, we hear the voice of a man from the loudspeaker. He is desperately searching for a 2 years old missing boy called Kang Chun who has 8 hairy leg and very friendly. Yesss, you read it perfectly! Everyone recognizes Mr. Unfortunate's voice, he is looking for his best friend: a spider.

After he realized his “son” is killed, he plans to make a funeral to him, and Ji Na has to take responsibility for her acts to be able to get the job. The boss sees the garden funeral where Ji Na is acting like she is very sad and sympathetic, so she gets her chance for the job. She and another enthusiastic and smart applicant Hye Mi get the job as interns who have to compete against each other. This is where our story really begins.

Yoo Ji Na played by Yang Jin Sung:

As I already said, Ji Na is our main character, who is a countryside girl, more specifically comes from a fisher family. She is really enthusiastic and committed to her job, and she will even lie if it’s needed. At the beginning of the story, for me as a watcher, she was kind of a liar and a jerk. I think her character was a little poorly represented. She is cheerful and bright but plays a lot with Tae Woon and sometimes not unintentionally. She is really using the innocent and naïve boy for her purposes, and blaming him for everything. She is not a character to be fond of I think, but you can disagree with me of course! Anyway, slowly after a lot of coincidences and meetings with Mr. Unfortunate, their feelings start to groove with each other. The funniest thing I think is that, for me, sometimes it’s hard to remember the character’s name if it’s not mentioned a lot, but here we have the opposite. Mr. Unfortunate calls her name so much, if we would make a drinking game about it, everyone would be drunk in 10 minutes. After 2-3 episodes when you hear him run and shout “Ji Na-ssi~, Ji Na-ssi~” the cold will be running around on your back. The actress is pretty (more pretty than the second female lead) and her playing is funny, the lack of her character is not her fault. But I can say that, after a few episodes her character became more loveable, although at the beginning she is kind of a witch. (but with a B and not a W)

Yoon Tae Woon (Mr. Unfortunate) played by No Min Woo:

Tae Woon is really handsome, tall, and a so called flower boy, but he has some faults. He is really but reeeally unfortunate, naïve, inexperienced, and somehow dumb. I can’t really say he is dumb because he is more like simple-minded. He is very philosophic, kind, and romantic and doesn't care about material things like clothes, money, job, school, or technology. (He is using a Walkman which is kinda romantic and vintage :D…I will search for mine). He also has a secret and very romantic side: a real boyfriend material and gentleman. Although he doesn't really know what to do with a woman.

As a gardener he loves flowers more than his life and, of course, appears a lot with bouquets or potted plants along with a romantic story to them. He can also play the piano and guitar and take photos. So we can say he is almost perfect! As soon as he appears he messes up Ji Na’s life with the most awkward coincidences, what just can happen. Like when Ji Na falls on him, and her hair get caught in the zipper of his pants…

Now, let’s take a look at the actor. Yeah, so a lot of people criticized this drama for making the almighty No Min Woo play such a dumb and “pathethic” character. In my opinion, trying out various characters is very important for an actor, especially if he is so good that he can portray it perfectly. No one forced him to play in this drama but he wanted to, and I think he has a lot of fun behind the scenes. (You can see a few funny BTS on his Instagram as I said already). He was a good choice I think, and Tae Woon's character is easy to fall in love with!

Hee Chul played by Jung Yoon Hak:

Hee Chul is the typical handsome boss, like in every kdrama where the workplace is in the main point of the story. Like he said about coffee:

In fact I think his character is boring and doesn’t have anything special. But of course this drama full of weirdos, so it should have some normal people for the balance! His character is important for the story, not only because he has something for Ji Na, but also he has a relation to the second female lead, Hye Mi.

Hye Mi played by Han Hye Rin:

Hye Mi is the daughter of the CEO (sorry if I’m wrong, I’m a little lost with this ^^”) who, in the absence of a male heir, wants Hee Chul to be his son-in-law, and gives him his position. Hye Mi and Hee Chul have a past and they are like brother-sister, but Hye Mi definitely loves Hee Chul. She is not a bad girl, she does some “mischief” to keep her position (in the company and as Hee Chul’s fiancée) but nothing serious. (yet!) The actress has a very common face, normally they try to portray the second female lead like she is prettier, richer, and smarter than the main actress. But In this case, I think Yang Jin Sung is so much prettier than her!

Before we finish up, take a look at the supporting characters:

r1wePPP3_ec3a50_f.jpg

Around Tae Woon, we have his two housemates: Soo Ji (Ahn Eun Jung) and Man Soo (Lee Yong Joo). The young girl Soo Ji clearly has feelings for Tae Woon and warns him about women, especially types like Ji Na. The other, Man Soo, is one of the weirdest characters in this drama! I can’t really say anything about it, he is also worth watching this drama for :D

MLOq99D4_dd8173_f.jpg

Although she is not an important character, Park Jin Joo also appears in this drama as Ji Na’s best friend: Chi Mal Sook. Their friendship seems a little lacking, but who doesn't pester her bestfriend a little! They are cute together, which could be because they've already played together in Bride of the Century.

She likes to take advantage of Ji Na, but she is also kind and helpful at the same time. I love this actress; she is funny, bright, and lovely-common. This drama also has a lot of funny coworkers. I will not list them, but they are worth the mention.

At last a few words about the OST. This drama has a looot of funny sound effects, the type you mostly hear only in stupid comedies (or in Benny Hill XD). But it also has a soundtrack, the main OST by F.cuz is a lovely song, and of course No Min Woo (as Icon) sung a beautiful ballad for the drama.

To sum up, I’ll not repeat myself, but if you like romantic-comedies (with more comedy then romance), or fed up with melodramas, you should watch this underestimated show! But try not to take it seriously.
