Dr. Gu tells the legend of Li Bing and his sons who created the system 2000 years in the past as a relief from "droughts in the east and flood in the west on the Shu plain", in ep. 28, 28:30, "creating a miracle".  A new channel, the Inner River, was dug out by the side of the hill to intake water. Moreover, Baopingkou (throat of the intake like the tap of a precious vase) was excavated through the hard conglomerate rock mass in order to intake water and also to control flood. Dr Gu thought this was much more remarkable than the usual legendary tale of Yugong Yishan (the old man Yu who moved the mountains) because it showed the miraculous effect of hard work and inventions.  He ended his speech with a saying to urge for better control to stay calm in the face of difficult choices:

3. Novel basis and adaptation for drama

"Zhìyù zhě" (治愈者 :"Healer") by Níngméng yǔ yān  (柠檬羽嫣). Author "Lemon" Yu Yan. According to Baidu, she was born in the 1990s, and selected in September 2021 into the list of new writers and new works of China's Internet Literature Influence List (2020).   [another author page stated that she specialized in romances and youth novels, had won awards, and had studied medicine, but that may be a confusion with this young author. Note there is a small discrepancy with the name Ning Meng Xi Yan on MDL which is erroneous]

4. Background information

4.1. Lakaya  (the cooperation between Africa  (Gabon) and China)

In ep.1 a flag appears several times, showing the inspiration for the fictional "Lakaya": it is the flag of Gabon, a French speaking west African country on the south Atlantic seafront to which has been added an inclusion of a red triangle with a star, reminding of the Chinese flag. Indeed,  China has contributed for over 46 years to Gabon's development by constructing the building of the National Assembly, hospitals, stadiums, hydropower stations and roads. Since 1977, Tianjin Province has been sending medical teams to Gabon. Specialists come on a two year basis to work in one of two select hospitals:  the Sino-Gabonese Cooperation Hospital in the city of Libreville and the Sino-Gabonese Friendship Hospital (Hopital de L'amitie Sino Gabonaise) in the town of Franceville.

Gabon was also known to be ruled by a rather dubious family (that of Omar Ali Bongo, the President, elected in 2016 in the face of opposing Jean Ping, a former diplomat (born in 1942 of a Chinese father and Gabonese mother) who had served as president of the UN General Assembly and as chair of the African Union Commission. Bongo (49.8 % of the vote), beat Ping (48.2 %) in an election that was not altogether transparent. Protesters demonstrated against Bongo’s alleged victory, even setting fire to the country’s parliament building in Libreville. But the Supreme Court of the country upheld the vote. In October 2018, Bongo suffered a stroke abroadand had to stay hospitalized repeatedly ; the country was ruled behind the scenes by his wife and elder son, until a junta staged a coup in  August 30,  2023. Led by General Brice Oligui Nguema, subsequently proclaimed President of the Transition, the military which had been reluctantly supporting the Bongo clan since a first short lived coup in 2019, finally ousted the Bongo clan from power.  The country is still in a state of unrest with curfew at night: — As of October 1, reaffirmed Nov. 1, "heightened security measures, including 00:01-05:00 curfew, remain in place across Gabon."

[Note1: Ali Bongo's dad, Omar Bongo, president of Gabon between 1967 and 2009, had been baptized as Albert Bongo at 33 years old, in 1968, but converted to Islam and became Omar Bongo in 1973, mostly for diplomatic reasons, to better get along with other oil exporting countries. Gabon is mostly Christian with a 70% majority of Catholics and an 8% minority of Muslims; but the traditional homegrown cults, spearheaded by the «Bwiti» cult, are more widespread than they seem: many Gabonese go both to Christian mass and Bwiti temples ; other cults have also a small following (although they are mostly dissident fractions of other creeds: Baha'i etc). - Omar Bongo died in 29, three months after having mourned his 3rd wife who had been the daughter of the Congolese president, Denis Sassou Nguesso. Omar Bongo had, over the years, 6 legitimate children, 5 adopted children, and at least16 children born out of wedlock, among his... 55 heirs who came into considerable wealth, not all legitimately earned, and almost dynastic power sharing!]

[Note2: The country has an estimated 2.4 million population, sandwiched between one small (Equatorial Guinea : 1.7 million est.) and two bigger countries (Cameroon : 28 million est. to the north ;  and the Republic of the Congo : 103.5 million est. to the east and south). --- Health:   HIV prevalence of Gabon fell gradually from 5.4 % in 2002 to 3 % in 2021.  Prevalence of HIV refers to the percentage of people ages 15-49 who are infected with HIV.   HIV and AIDS Estimates: 49,000 people live with it, among which 2,300 children, according to UNAIDS data.  ]

[Note3: although the Gabonese economy relies heavily on the trade of oil, manganese, uranium, and other resources such as  precious wood, timber, it is interesting that this country was also the first consumer of alcohol in Africa, according to a 2019 study by the WHO reported by a Gabonese newsclip: this ties in with Su Weian's lucrative trade of imported Maotai! The trade balance is 36,4 % exports to China vs 15.2% imports. An appropriate visa and work permit is required for foreigners who wish to work in Gabon; it is typically valid 2 years, but foreign investments are welcomed provided they conform to the rules set by a heavy bureaucracy. Driving requires a valid drivers license, but foreigners can use their foreign drivers license converted to International Drivers License in Gabon, for up to a year.)

This is maybe mirrored in the presence of the vaudevillean army of "General Kouyate" in the drama.  [As for that Kouyate name, there is a Senegalese football (soccer) player named Cheikhou Kouyaté, who plays as a defensive midfielder or centre-back for Premier League club Nottingham Forest and the Senegal national team. Kouyaté moved from Senegal to Belgium in 2006, having been offered a youth contract at RWDM Brussels.]

• Du Yuncheng 杜云成. Dr. Gu's elder half-brother, born out of wedlock, and head of JIEHUI, a pharmaceutical company involved in the research an upcoming marketing of a drug targeting HD); he was a rival of Dr Gu in everything, including in trying to find back and attract Su Wei'an (who was a younger classmate of his in medical school: he used to perform with her in a band for relaxation, and had proposed to her back then, but she had turned him down). He was the first to be aware of her condition, and that was the cause of his turning to finance research of the drug developed by Wen. When it failed because of too many serious side effects, he set out to develop an improved version but failing again, he turned to illegal foreign imports in collusion with fake medical companies.  (played by Shawn Wei - 魏千翔)

Since the disappearance of Su Wei'an, she had laid out a plan to seduce and marry Du Yuncheng, who seemed bound to become rich with the marketing of the new drug.  (played by Qian Di Di - 钱迪迪)
• Dr. He Xiaoguang 贺晓光 , a lackluster professor at Huaren Hospital, who had been corrupted by Wen Ran, nastily taunted Dr. Fang  about his PTSD (ep15) and tried to make things difficult for Dr Gu and for Su Wei'an.  (played by  Zhang Yi - 张衣 )

• Li Wantong 李菀桐 (played by Zhao Meng Shu - 赵梦姝 ), a psychologist returnee from Harvard (ep.13) who took a fancy for Dr Gu and pestered him until she gave up and hooked on to Dr. Eliot  (see below) in ep.20 . She shows impressive jiu jitsu skills in ep.14.
• Wen Yuliang  温玉良 (played by  Ren Shan - 任山)  the first specialist researcher of Huaren Hospital who developed the drug targeting HD)  He was a dedicated researcher, but he was hoodwinked by Du Yuncheng and Wen Ran to continue dangerous testing in "phase III" of the HQD39  drug to treat HD. (Phase III, which often lasts a year or more, is the validation test phase of a drug before it gets authorization to be marketed) . 
• Zhao Mei Lan 赵美兰 [Su Wei An's mother] (played by Cui Yi - 崔奕)  She spent her retirement time squere dancing, and was quite naive about  Du zong, Wen Ran, and her daughter's condition, although she suspected that her husband had died in an accident due to the same condition as his sister (Su Wei'an's aunt "gugu") who was suffering from Huntington's disease.
• Du Run Ze 杜润泽 (played by Ren Luo Min - 任洛敏)   A retiree mostly concerned about his garden, living in a beautiful traditional house in a high end residential area, he was Dr Gu and Du Yuncheng's grandfather,  but doted only on Dr Gu, slighting Du Yuncheng at every occasion. 
• Yan Kai 颜凯 (played by  Meng En - 蒙恩) He had finished studies abroad and been set up as blind date for Jiang Muyin (see above) by their parents in ep.13, but only went on with it as a charade to placate his parents (ep15): he barely appears in a couple of episodes. 
• Su Yuan 苏媛  (played by  Xi Yu Li - 席与立)   She was Su Wei'an's aunt, sister of her father, and had been a star violin soloist until Huntington's Disease caught up with her, after SWA's dad died in an accident, and his blood tested positive for the condition.
• general Kouyate (not credited). This character is only mentioned as "general" (将军) in the Baidu synopsis of first six episodes, so the name Kouyate that was used in English subtitles was perhaps only added there.
•  Dr Eliot 艾略特 (played by Ukrainian "Alex"). This "French doctor" character first appears episodes 5-6  in Lakaya. He was attracted to SWA and wanted to persuade her to follow him to France, but gave up when he realized she only wanted to work on Huntington's Disease, the research on which had been discontinued there. Reappearing in China, he became the boyfriend of Li Wantong (ep19) and helped Dr Gu with some research (ep.20)
  
• Lu Zhenxing 陆正兴 (played by Lan Cheng - 蓝)城)  He was a pioneering authority on brain mapping, who toured his hometown Jinhai  on the last leg of his travels. (ep.17-19). DYC wished to acquire his patent for Jiehui company.

4.3. A Tragedy but with some less heavy moments too

Despite the seriousness of the incurable disease topic, there are also funny moments in this drama, such as Su Wei'an relieving Dr Gu's fever with a frozen fish wrapped in paper !!  (ep. 26)

and the fall of the wish token for everlasting love on the head of a man who had been waiting for it 40 years ! and was chasing after Fang and Jiang to scold them, at Dujiangyan (ep  28) :

In the drama, we also could see him cooking a dish of noodles with tomato and fried eggs, in ep.17. (Luo Yunxi has been vlogging some more elaborate dishes which he likes too, privately, apart from using these skills in dramas).

4.4. ABOUT HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE

As the characters stated in the drama, there are about 30,000 sufferers in China. Huntington's disease (HD) is a monogenic neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG expansions within the Huntington gene (Htt); it has a prevalence of 1 in 10,000 worldwide and is invariably fatal.   Typically, symptoms begin between age 30 and 55. Children of parents with Huntington's disease have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the HD gene. If a child does not inherit the gene, he or she won't develop the disease and can't pass it on. 

Nevertheless, in around 3% of cases of Huntington's disease, there's no obvious family history of the condition. This could be because relatives with the condition died before they were diagnosed with it. In rare cases, it's due to a new fault in the gene that causes Huntington's disease. (NHS Inform)  A Stanford paper states that it has been established that part of occurence can be due to mutations in the genes : "It is estimated that anywhere from 1%-14% of persons with HD did not inherit the HD allele from a parent, but instead acquired the HD allele from a newly formed mutation. In British Columbia, a study discovered that of 141 patients with HD, 11 had no family history of HD. All 11 cases had reliable parental information with parents who lived well into old age with no signs of the disease. Thus, this study estimated the new mutation rate to be at least 8%."

The highest frequencies of HD are found in Europe and countries of European origin, such as the United States and Australia. As of the year 2000, there were 30,000 cases of HD in the United States – indicating a prevalence rate of about 100 cases per million people. The lowest documented frequencies of HD are found in Africa, China, Japan, and Finland."

It is an "orphan disease" (too few people have it to warrant enough funding for studies and cure research) : Like ALS, whose eponymous sufferer was baseball player Lou Gehrig, Huntington's has a famous victim — the folk singer Woody Guthrie, who died in 1967 at age 55 (His famous song This Land is Your Land is considered by some as a US national anthem). Both diseases proceed unabated once their symptoms appear. Neither has a cure in sight. Huntington's disease has particularly cruel features. The disease produces an unusual protein that damages brain cells, leading to a range of problems from involuntary movements (called chorea) to psychiatric conditions, such as mood disorders and psychotic episodes.

The disease was named after George Huntington (April 9, 1850 – March 3, 1916) who was an American physician. He described it in one of the 2 medical papers he published, when he was 22 years old, after encountering two women who suffered from "chorea" on a road, frightening the people who encountered them.

The case study of Woody Guthrie reveals that the disease ran in his family. His mother, Nora Guthrie, had it but the family didn't know until after her death. Guthrie's lifestyle involved travelling and playing, and heavy drinking, to which the first symptoms, in the 1940s, were attributed. Guthrie's behavior became more erratic, and he ended up being hospitalized in 1952. He finally was officially diagnosed with Huntington's disease. Guthrie wrote his friend and fellow folk performer Pete Seeger that the "chorea keeps me just as dizzy [as whiskey] and [was] a good bit cheaper". At the time, the primary treatment for Huntington's disease was being placed in a psychiatric hospital, but Guthrie was released and continued his traveling ways.   In 1954, Guthrie checked himself into Brooklyn State Hospital where he stayed for two years. Next, after being arrested for vagrancy, he was committed against his will to Greystone Park Hospital where he stayed for five years. From there, he was transferred first to Brooklyn State Hospital to be closer to his ex wife's home in Coney Island, New York. She cared for him and managed to communicate with him in the final years, where he was transferred again in 1966, and finally died in Creedmor State Hospital, located in Queens, New York. Guthrie was only 55 years old when he died on October 3, 1967. His family decided to cast his ashes into the waters off Coney Island, New York. He left behind an impressive legacy, including more than 1,000 songs and two novels, and influenced countless performers, such as Bob Dylan.

HD vs the Plague : Huntington's disease remains incurable, while other diseases which can cause panic, like plague are in fact rather easy to treat:  the plague, which can come in three forms (bubonic, the most common ; pneumonic or septicemic) is a bacterial infection which can be treated successfully with antibiotics. "There are about 12 countries on the planet that have plague. And sporadic cases of plague, believe it or not, are expected in many of these countries," said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist with Toronto General Hospital (among the 12 countries are the USA, Mongolia, China, Madagascar).  But outbreaks are generally small, with a few cases involved, and easy to treat and contain, as shown in the Love is Panacea drama.

The box office of Chengdu ranked the fifth in the country during the first half of this year. It also holds rich cultural resources such as Sanxingdui and Three Kingdom culture, and it is the hometown of panda. These are part of the reasons why the Golden Panda Awards takes place in Sichuan from Sept 19 to 2023 (25 awards in four categories of film, TV dramas, documentary and animation.). Statistics show the number of online movies grew from 450 in 2014 to nearly 1,900 in 2017, and the market size rose from 2014's 100 million yuan ($14 million) to 2 billion yuan ($280 million) in 2017.

In the future, Chengdu Film & TV City [brand new in Pidu district] will also emphasize talent training, content creation, and brand incubation. It will collaborate with domestic and foreign film, television, and cultural innovation enterprises and excellent teams in the industry, striving to construct a "source spot" for film and television contents, a "preferred spot" for filming and production, a "new highland" for film and television technology, and a "destination" for film and television cultural tourism. This will promote the film and television industry to flourish in Chengdu. A 50,000-square-meter industry-education building is equipped with over one hundred sound studios, live studios and film studios.

Chengdu JinXi Cultural Media and Production Company ( 成都金玺创意文化传媒有限公司), headquartered in Chengdu  is an organization that focuses on planning, production, distribution and investment of films and television dramas.

"Chengdu Star Film and Television Base" is actually a park located at 132-136, the middle section of Baoguang Avenue, Sanxi Road, Xindu District, Chengdu. It is a good place to visit: next to Baoguang Temple, it used to be built by Sichuan TV Station as an antique street, but it was demolished and turnedinto a park.
