Friendship/Brotherhood
Shows that contain platonic love, loyalty, trust and protectiveness between a pair--or group--of men.

1. School 2013
Korean Drama - 2012, 16 episodes
The depth of this friendship is breathtaking. There cannot be hate unless love first exists. If this show focused solely on the friendship of the two male leads, it would receive a solid ten stars in my book.
-
2. Reunion 2: Mystery of the Abyss
Chinese Movie - 2022
These two friends know each other so well they can communicate without words. They are mutually protective, but still treat each other as equals in strength and intelligence. Features soft, protective men that have not been stripped of their masculinity. Two thumbs up!

3. Wuliang
Chinese Movie - 2020
A relationship that progresses from duty to brotherhood. The visuals in this film are stunning, and while the runtime is short, the story doesn't feel rushed. Ending is slightly bittersweet, but did not lessen my enjoyment of the film.
-
4. Kids on the Slope
Japanese Movie - 2018
Complete opposites brought together by a shared passion. Sweet depiction of youthful trials and the lasting warmth of friendship. Bonus points for a romance that does not detract from the story.
-
5. Aozora no Tamago
Japanese Drama - 2012, 9 episodes
Brothers in everything but blood. These two balance each others' strengths and weaknesses perfectly. Tender and emotional in a way few dramas are brave enough to show.
-
6. Tokyo Revengers
Japanese Movie - 2021
I have a soft-spot for wholesome, gang related stories (I know, not a thing in real life, but this is fiction—I get a pass). This one contains everything my little heart desires: found-family, loyalty, brotherhood, a strong female lead and genuinely cute romance.
It's an underdog story with plenty of character grown, and a huge heart.
Warning: Brief Nudity and Strong Violence Throughout.

7. Under the Skin
Chinese Drama - 2022, 20 episodes
Beautiful depiction of enemies-to-friends. The actor who plays artist Shen Yi is emotionally intense in a understated, no-word-needs-to-be-said kind of way. I was riveted by his performance.
-
8. Prison Playbook
Korean Drama - 2017, 16 episodes
The ultimate feel-good show with too many friendships to count. You will laugh, cry and coo through every episode...and best of all, everyone gets a happy ending!
One of the secondary characters is in a same-sex relationship, just FYI, but it isn't the focus of the show.
-
9. Good Manager
Korean Drama - 2017, 20 episodes
One of the best underdog stories I've ever found with found-family, brotherhood, male/female friendship uncomplicated by romance and the enemies-to-friends trope. I don't usually like comedy, but this was a complete exception for me. Several moments had me dying with laughter, and I still laugh out loud when rewatching.
-
10. A League of Nobleman
Chinese Drama - 2023, 29 episodes
A bit all over the place, (censorship at its finest--at least an hour of this was left on the cutting room floor) and with gaping plot-holes, but the friendships left for viewing are multifaceted jewels.
-
11. Cross Fire
Chinese Drama - 2020, 36 episodes
Big brother, little brother dynamic, though not related by blood. Found family and all the feels that go with it.
-
12. Dive
Chinese Drama - 2019, 30 episodes
A deep, caring friendship between the 2 MLs. Gets a little bogged down in side-plots, but still worth the watch.
-
13. Reunion: The Sound of the Providence
Chinese Drama - 2020, 32 episodes
More subtle than some, and at times buried under overlong and convoluted plot, but still a beautiful friendship.
-
14. Hikaru no Go
Chinese Drama - 2020, 36 episodes
These three approach co-dependency, but the friendship between the two boys, and the mentor/student relationship between ghost and lead are tooth-rottingly cute.
