Asian movies I've watched and enjoyed
-
1. Blade of the Immortal
Japanese Movie - 2017
The first time I watched it I dropped it because of the constant fighting but I tried again and finally understood the appeal. It's very dark and at times cold and emotionless. But the movie somehow catches you emotionally. It may be for the despair underlying the whole story or for the greek tragedy character played (very well) by Kimura or the dark irony that flourishes now and then. Tarantino's Kill Bill is floating in the air.

2. Zatoichi
Japanese Movie - 2003
-
3. Parasite
Korean Movie - 2019
A movie you watch in awe and fascination. So well done that you feel it in your guts, like reading a novel by LF Céline. The scene of the flood reminded me so much of scenes in "Le voyage au bout de la nuit".

4. A Frozen Flower
Korean Movie - 2008

5. In the Mood for Love
Hong Kong Movie - 2000
-
6. #Alive
Korean Movie - 2020

7. Lust, Caution
Chinese Movie - 2007
Ang lee's movie is full of tension and passion. Tony Leung portrays a traitor to his country; despite all his wrongdoings, you never manage to hate him completely and as he keeps being fascinating. The main character is a female student who struggles to keep on tracks with her mission when passion and hard truths make their way to her heart. I couldn't help but think about Coppola's Godfather.

8. Burning
Korean Movie - 2018
-
9. The Man from the Sea
Japanese Movie - 2018
At first I had a hard time understanding what it was all about. You have to let it go and just follow the tide. It seems is's a kind of metaphor for nature and especially water, sometimes it heals and helps you, sometimes it just hurts you. Unpredictable and fascinating.
