All the cast were great but of course (I am a Takuya Kimura fan through and through) Manji was the best. The fight scenes were fluid. It was bloody, very, but it was executed finely, I never had a look-away-it-is-gross moment. Miike did a great job of directing this, everything was just on point. And Takuya's voice was so manly, it was just how I imagine Manji would sound when I read the manga version. Takuya Kimura did an excellent job of portraying Manji, it is like he strips off his persona and wears this new person. You wouldn't even recognize him as his previous characters.

The over-all execution was really awesome, flawless, for me. The flow of the film from the black and white to the colored one was superb. I am not a big fan of bloody movies but I am glad I watched this. I am also very glad that they stuck to the manga as best as they can.
If there is one this I feel that is lacking, it is the musical scoring. I don't know if it was as intended but I felt like some scenes would have been more effective with a good background music.

It is not a masterpiece, but it is above most other modern samurai films and good adaptation of the manga. A  manga series of "Hiroaki Samura" was for almost twenty years present  and surprising that it took so long to get a Live Action adaptation. "Blade of the Immortal" revolves around Manji, a samurai who has been cursed with immortality and can not die. He becomes the bodyguard of a new named Rin who comes seeking help to avenge the death of his parents. The film begins quite directly a classic chanbara. Once transited to the main plot, it becomes a modern interpretation of a samurai movie. The  themes of the film are sometimes heavy, mainly dealing with  repercussions of life forever, repentance and the cycle of life and  death. Everything is melodramatic, but fit the general epic tone of the narrative.
How fighting scenes are fantastic for the most part, since Manji has  battles with many different types of people who possess their unique  weapons and skill sets.
Like many samurai films, "Blade of the Immortal" has a complicated plot with a lot of political intrigue. With  the running time exceeding two hours, the film may feel as if it were  dragging sometimes with characters in general, going into long  monologues before and after fighting.
