She dropped out of the Department of Architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts. While still in university, she completed the animation directing course "Higashikoganei Sonjuku 2" hosted by Miyazaki Hayao. This opportunity led to her being cast in the highly successful film "Spirited Away," bringing her into the spotlight as a voice actress. In August 1999, she formed the musical performance group "Psalm" with koto player Karin.
In December 2007, she married director Yamamoto Sosuke.
On September 27, 2015, she released her first solo album "MOTHE SUN" (Fuwa Works & Chitei Records).
