Maciej Karpinski is a Polish prose writer, playwright, screenwriter, literary and theatre critic, and educator born in Warsaw, Poland.

He graduated from Warsaw's Stefan Batory II High School class of 1968. He completed his studies in art history at the University of Warsaw in 1974. He debuted as a writer in 1969 with satirical texts in the Student Satirical Theatre.

He collaborated as a critic with the editorial teams of various magazines. In the 1980s, he taught at universities in the United States. He returned to Poland in 1987.

From 1989 to 1994, he served as Vice President of the Polish Filmmakers Association (SFP). In 1989, he became the literary manager at "Perspektywa". Since 1991, he has been teaching the Scriptwriting Course at the Lodz Film School.

He is the founder and president of the Board of the Guild of Polish Film Screenwriters. Until 2005, he served as the director of the Gdynia Polish Film Festival. In 2005, he became the Plenipotentiary of the Director of the Polish Film Institute for Foreign Promotion.
