In 1966 he left Shochiku to become a freelancer. He then spent his career directing TV dramas until the 1980s.
On December 16, 2011, he was found dead with his wife in his apartment in Shinjuku, Tokyo, after a visiting caregiver was unable to contact him. The cause of death was said to be an illness, because of missing noticeable trauma, but in later inspection it was concluded he died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a gas stove.
Rock band member Otsuki Kenji is his nephew.
