Genius, But Where Was the Excitement?
Genius Girlfriend started with a promising idea, but somewhere along the way, it lost me. The story had sweet moments and likeable leads, but the pacing was so slow that I eventually skipped a few episodes just to get to the end. That is never a good sign.
The romance was cute enough, and the leads were intelligent, which was a refreshing change, but the story simply did not have enough excitement to keep me fully invested. There were too many moments where not much seemed to happen, and I found myself wondering when we were finally going to get somewhere. It is such an annoying trope, especially when a drama claims to give us an intelligent female lead, only to make her arrogant, emotionally careless or unlikeable just so the male lead can eventually humble her and prove he is still the superior genius. It often feels as if the writers are saying, “Yes, she is brilliant, but don’t worry, the man will still win in the end.
There is nothing wrong with an intelligent woman being confident, competitive or even making mistakes. But why must her intelligence be treated like a character flaw that needs correcting, while the male lead’s intelligence is usually presented as attractive, admirable and unquestionable? And then, just when she starts to shine, the story suddenly has her make ridiculous mistakes so the ML can swoop in, solve everything and reclaim his position as the dominant genius. Honestly, it gets old very quickly.

The biggest problem for me was the male lead. Even when he was supposed to be in love, he barely showed any emotion, so the romance often felt one sided and lacked the emotional pull it needed. It had potential, but not enough excitement, emotion or chemistry to keep me fully invested. A truly strong female lead should be allowed to remain intelligent, capable and compassionate without being deliberately pulled down so the male lead can look superior. Let them both be brilliant. Let them challenge each other. Let them both win sometimes. Intelligence is not a competition where the woman has to lose so the man can still wear the crown.
Overall, not a terrible drama, just a boring one for me. It had potential, but I felt the story dragged longer than necessary. I finished it mainly because I wanted to know how it ended, not because I was desperate for the next episode.
