The Road to Splendor was an enjoyable watch with two leads I genuinely liked. The story had intrigue, danger, schemes and enough going on to keep me interested. The main leads also worked well together, and even through the misunderstandings and chaos, they continued to support each other. That was probably one of the strongest parts of their relationship.
My main pet peeve was the female lead. In the beginning, she was presented as intelligent, strategic and always thinking ahead of the game. Then, towards the end, when it really mattered, she seemed to lose some of that sharpness and became just another wife caught up in scheming against the other women. I kept waiting for that brilliant strategist from the beginning to return and rise above the game instead of simply being dragged into it.
The romance was another missed opportunity. The storyline clearly told us these two loved each other, but I did not always feel it strongly enough. Their loyalty and support for each other were there, but the emotional and romantic connection could have been developed much better. Sometimes I felt the drama was telling me they were deeply in love rather than letting me actually see and feel it.
And then there is my biggest Cdrama pet peeve: self sacrifice. One person decides to leave, marry someone else or give up the relationship supposedly to protect the other. Honestly, marriage is not about one person disappearing nobly into the sunset while the other suffers alone. Marriage is togetherness. It is standing side by side, facing the enemy, the family, the kingdom and the entire world if necessary. Stop sacrificing yourselves for each other and start fighting together.
Overall, I enjoyed the drama and liked both leads. It had a good story, strong potential and a couple who supported each other through misunderstandings and difficulties. I just wish the female lead had remained the strategist she was introduced as, and that the romance had been shown with more depth instead of leaving us to fill in too much of it ourselves.
Final verdict: A good story with likeable leads, but give me the brilliant female strategist back and let the couple actually fight for their marriage together instead of constantly sacrificing themselves for love
