True, true. I feel like the relationship had a big barrier because of their trust issues and them both being "mature" characters, there were many instances where they acted more childish then some of the characters in idol dramas. I don't believe he was testing as much as he felt inferior to Tao and wanted to not have to deal with his problems. Although, perhaps he also wanted Qin Shi to be proactive for one. Either way, it really butchered the romance line.

You're right, he didn't live of their money (sry) and it's not wrong to live modestly of course. However, during his time where he lived with his parents, he had no motivation for his life. He went through each day without any direction and basically wasted away.
