It does matter that he is, it matters why he is.

You should not detest them. First the old man is not really old in the sense of the word, second he tells him, he should not do so. Third Amane explains in Ep2 why he did so which is understandable, but also explains his struggles in a gay life.

As you have seen in the first two episodes, it's his choice to do so, because he's afraid of beeing hurt by feelings. It's his way to compensate. While you may not agree with this, you should try to understand. There are a lot of people doing that in real life, so I think, it's not "bad" per se, it's just a bad way of dealing with their own feelings.
