I actually loved the Zhang Zhe arc! However given the length of it I wished it could have either ended sooner, or the drama could be longer! In my opinion episode 31-38 really could have been made more like twenty episodes. π Especially the time spent in Pingnan Wang's mansion I felt like in reality that covered months and months of relationship development that I missed out on π.
It's so unfortunate that Chinese is impossible to directly translate and a lot of nuance gets lost! My father is English and my mother is Chinese, and we've been watching dramas together for ages! Unfortunately my dad doesn't speak a word of Chinese and it's such a shame because I find myself explaining a lot of ooomph important scenes after the fact to him and he's like ohhhhhhhh that makes so much sense π.
In fact since you're interested in the chinese language I'll explain the concept that I explain to non-chinese speakers the most in dramas (sorry if you already know this). This concept is that in chinese historical dramas most characters refer to themselves in the third person using different titles, and the nuances of how the refer to themselves really contribute to dynamics between characters. Unfortunately this is almost never translated because it would be very cringe in English ππ. For example Xuening refers to herself as daughter in front of her parents, a young girl in front of the Emperor and Empress Dowager. In front of Xie Wei she sometimes calls herself Xuening or 'your student' depending on the situation. There are only a select few times she actually refers to herself using 'I' to Xie Wei, of course the emotional moments later in the series and this adds so much to the feeling for me! I can honestly go on on about this, it also happens in LBFAD with DFQC.
I also love morally grey characters such as those you mentioned! I must recommend that you watch Rise of the Phoenixes (Chen Kun & Ni Ni) which is now on youtube with English subtitles! The production value is super high, the acting and plot is amazing! And the male lead, is super morally grey and an anti-hero. He is very reticent and super similar to Xie Wei with his reserved scholar, super smart vibe. I would say he is perhaps darker than both DFCQ and Xie Wei. Do prepare yourself because there is angst and it is super long but it was so worth it for me!
I really hope that Bai Lu and Zhang Linghe will collaborate on another project together! I don't care whether it's modern, palace, wuxia, xianxia as long as it's like 40 eps long! I've been watching dramas for years and I've never shipped a couple this hard!! Of course I'm happy for the leads and support them individually whether they are dating or not, *but I can't help but secretly hope they are*!!!
I suppose we do have hope though as Bai Lu has collaborated twice with Xu Kai and twice with Luo Yunxi and twice with Wang Xingyue, it's not out of the blue for her to be in another drama with Zhang Linghe!! I'm praying!

At this point we can see that she is already an important person in his life and they also start collaborating together to protect Yan Lin etc. He also starts trying to help her outside of the situation of Yan family, with You Fangyin and her salt business.
In ep 19 Xuening uses him to take down the rebels and get her own money back. In the scene where Xuening goes to Xie Wei's house and he returns her money and qin to her. There's a part where she leaves abruptly and he looks like he wants her to stay longer and spend more time together. I really noticed this part as when he starts to miss her presence and be around her more.
Of course in episode 20-23 she is taken by the rebels and takes full responsibility for her in front of her father. He priorities her over the mission and everything. I think his feelings are really clear from this point, though I don't think he really admits it to himself. He also starts getting jealous of Zhang Zhe.
In ep 23 they have the fight in the temple in the snow and he all but reveals himself in front of her, his dark side and also says he's not as good as Zhang Zhe. He also exposes his possessiveness when he says 'ζε ζΆδΊδ½ ηε½' which was translated as 'I'll take you life' in english but as a Chinese speaker this had other connotations and to me it means more of collect/keep/receive... basically your life belongs to me.
I believe that he realises his feelings and starts to consider his future with Xuening when Lu Xian gets married. As someone fixated on his goals, revenge, ambitions, he'd never thought about marriage before, but now that Lu Xian is getting married he also realises that there's a future outside of revenge with Jiang Xuening. Then of course he sees Xuening after her fight with Zhang Zhe where he basically offers himself up as candidate for future husband π.
Really good happy ending, very satisfying, leads get together in latter half but they interact throughout.
More like a quadrilateral π at certain points there are more than one man in love with Xuening, but the characters are mature about it, there aren't any petty misunderstandings and everything is resolved well π
