The Early Spring — A Drama I Can't Let Go Of
I don't even know how to write a normal review for The Early Spring, because somewhere along the way, this drama stopped feeling like something I was simply watching. I completely disappeared into it. And even now that it has ended, a part of me is still living somewhere inside its world.
I have watched many dramas I loved. But The Early Spring did something completely different to me. After finishing it, other dramas suddenly felt... unreal. Like I was watching actors playing characters again, instead of actually witnessing people whose lives I had become emotionally invested in.
And so much of that is because of Jing Boran.
His portrayal of Luke — Luan Nian — was nothing short of extraordinary. He didn't just play the character. He inhabited him. The way he looked at people, the smallest changes in his expression, his voice, his posture, his presence, the way he carried himself... everything made Luke feel like a real person rather than a fictional character.
There were moments when I genuinely forgot I was watching Jing Boran. I was watching Luke.
And somehow, after seeing him, even when I read the novel, my mind automatically puts Jing Boran's face, voice and mannerisms to Luke. The character and the actor have become almost impossible for me to separate.
What makes his performance even more remarkable is the way he portrayed Luke across different stages of his life. He made the character's age, experiences, emotional scars and maturity feel believable without ever having to overplay them. There is a quiet masculinity and life experience in his portrayal that cannot simply be manufactured. It feels lived-in.
Some scenes completely destroyed me. The phone call during the recording session is one I could watch over and over again and still feel the same emotional punch every single time. And the reunion in episode 24... that scene alone was worth everything.
But this drama would not have been what it was with Jing Boran alone.
The entire cast was exceptional. Everyone brought something real to the story, and the chemistry between the characters made the world feel incredibly alive. There was never the feeling that one actor was carrying everyone else. The whole cast contributed to making this story what it became.
And then there is the music. Liu Yuning's OST has become so deeply connected to Luke for me that I don't think I will ever hear it quite the same way again.
I finished The Early Spring wanting more. Not because the story wasn't enough, but because I simply wasn't ready to leave these characters behind. I want more of Luke. More of Luan Nian. More of this world. More of the feeling this drama gave me.
I'm still not ready to let it go.
That is probably the highest compliment I can give a drama.
Some dramas are entertaining.
Some are beautiful.
Some stay in your memory.
And then there are dramas like The Early Spring — the ones that somehow become an emotional place you don't want to leave.
For me, this is one of those dramas.
And Jing Boran's Luke will stay with me for a very, very long time.
