It's just a slice-of-life show, and that's it
It's a comedy slice-of-life show, and that's alright. Its production really reminds me of japanese bls, and so does the storyline. It's simple. Yet, it's kinda dull. As usual, TutorYim's acting are amazing. They're incredibly talented. Still, the narrative is just too weak. Once again, the production was there. Such a beautiful cinematography! But what's up with the script team having a beef with TutorYim? Of course I do understand that this show comes from a day-to-day basis, it is supposed to be easygoing and feel natural, but it doesn't mean it has to be this gray thing. Personally, I didn't have a problem with the ammount of NC scenes nor the sexual undertones of the whole show. I guess it's natural when they're a young and in love couple. Still, there were lots of other ways to go from it. See, in Battle of The Writers, all of the NC scenes felt so well-placed in the story. ChermChey's just feel random, that's the thing. Anyway, it's a comedy show, it's not supposed to be a really big deal. I wish TutorYim get to star a well written show, still. Also, something's worth thinking about is the way ChermChey was probably planned to be received by the audience weekly, considering the rhythm of the story. But, in a long term, that really sucks. Found Yim so cute in this series as a whole. Tutor's unbelievably beautiful with a blonde hair. They're so good.Was this review helpful to you?
Good Everything but the Story
TutorYim are surely one of a kind pair in this industry. They have an amazing chemistry and a flawless acting perfomance. They're beautiful, talented and such good professionals. Even the side characters had great performances. The production, overall, was also quite stunning! Such creative ways to portray many scenarios! But, when it comes to the backbone of any narrative, the storyline, what in the world is happening? Personally, I enjoy carefree, creative narratives, but this is just chaotic. At some point, I started to think that the real Battle of The Writers was happening in the script team of the show. Bad idea followed by a bad idea and even worse idea. Of course, some things were enjoyable! Truly must give TutorYim the credits for making the few enjoyable moments enjoyable though. The ending, for instance, was quite touching. Also were their moments as children. But, overall... Wow. I think there were just too many things happening at the same time. I truly hope TutorYim get to star a show that can fully match to their potential. They're an amazing couple! The visual effects were surprisingly good, the footage montage, the editing. Visually flawless. In the other hand, I guess I'll never forget P'Jao Samut's dubbed-audio. The budget for everything was there, except for a writer. Which is funny considering the amount of writers portrayed in the show. Well: no hate at all! I got to end the twelve episodes without much issue. It's just that I believe that, if the storyline and the narrative were more solid and well-organized, this would've been such an amazing show. Shout out to everyone!Was this review helpful to you?
Our Youth: an absolute masterpiece.
In a industry where the relationship between people of the same sex is extrapolated, superficial, cheap, misinterpretaded and souless, "Our Youth" comes as a reminder that there are people out there whom are actually working to embrace the art of the complicated love thats upon two young, confused boys in the real world, with real problems and relatable feelings.As the series keeps being swinged between past, present and future, Minase, a polite, quiet student, finds out the truth about Hirukawa, the so-called school's rude and problematic boy who's actually a sweet, needy boy who deals with a alcoholic father, a distant mother and no references of being good at all, at least until Minase steps into his life.
That's what kept me going the most, the way the storyline manages to feel delicate, quiet almost, subtle and soft in every single take, even when portraying heavy themes and profound emotions. It's an absolute proof that the care of the filmmaking team was really there, that the actors were exploring their characters, that everyone involved in this project were in synergy while producing the whole thing. It's something you can feel.
Junsei and Kenshin acting still keeps me speechless to this day. They're young actors yet so talented and a hardworking duo. When the timeskip came and a suddenly-smoker Minase glances to nowhere, I knew instantly that everything had changed, yet everything was still the same. It's Junsei's prime in this series, the hability to portrait the loneliness, the sadness, the emptyness and the longing without saying a single word. He's just walking by the beach where his father had filmed his first love's favorite movie in silence, yet you know everything.
Kenshin's acting keeps up with Junsei, no doubt. Hirukawa's beach confession were probably one of the most emotional scenes that I have ever seen. He's talking about how he were in the dark, and how he felt afraid of being alone, but when the moring came, he thought of Minase, he thought of their love and contemplated how it warmed his heart. It's heartwarming and heartwrecking at the same time, it's unbelievable. We go from a reckless punk to a birth of a new Hirukawa, who smiles more, who talks more and who's finally happy and chasing a good life for him.
I must say, "Our Youth" it's a beautiful series that tells the story of how love found two lost, empty boys. It's the kind of show that makes the watcher sit and wonder after finishing the last episode. It's the kind of show that has lots of details, of little hidden things. The kind of series that's interested in the emotions, in the art and in the message. It's quietly stunning, gentle and deep. The realization of it finds me at the very end, when they're in the sea, playing and laughing together and they understand each other, and there's pure love and tenderness in the sound of the waves, their glances and the silence. Makes me think about lots of things, which is the purpose of art, to provoke and wake feelings up, and "Our Youth" does it perfectly in its every second. An absolute masterpiece.
