First off, if you're going to comment here about how you're not going to watch his work anymore, how you're boycotting him, blah blah blah, that's your choice. But if you're going to speak so strongly about the situation, at least know what actually happened. Otherwise, it feels like you care enough to condemn someone but not enough to understand what you're condemning them for. I'm not really a fan of the age gap and I don't think there's anything wrong with criticizing it. But I do have a problem with people taking claims that haven't been properly established and turning them into facts especially the claims that she "died on his birthday," that he was responsible for her death, or that he didn't help her financially. I'm not really into Kpop, Kdramas or Korean entertainment as a whole. I can count the Kdramas I've watched on one hand. When this whole thing first came out, I actually thought Kim Soo hyun was guilty. My first thought was, "Why would her family lie?" I assumed there had to be something serious behind their accusations. But then I started looking into everything that was being presented and the way the story unfolded made me increasingly uncomfortable. It stopped feeling like people were trying to establish what actually happened and started feeling like an emotional witch hunt. Claims were made, people reacted emotionally and when questions were raised about those claims, something else would be introduced to redirect everyone's attention. The accuser, a YouTuber who has been known as a cyberbully for years, was reportedly asking for donations before posting a picture of Kim Sae ron with Kim Soo hyun. That's already something that should make people pause. Then there were claims that he was blackmailing Kim Soo hyun, saying that if he didn't call off KnockOff, more pictures would be released.
One picture of Kim Soohyun washing dishes while wearing shorts was also presented in a way that made it look like he wasn't wearing anything. Her own letter was said to have a different age gap from the one being claimed publicly, with 14 years being referenced instead of 12. There were so many inconsistencies that I don't understand how people could look at all of this and immediately decide that every accusation had been proven. I read the letter Kim Soo hyun wrote too. There was nothing particularly romantic about the wording. It came across more like a response, with him talking about his military day and other things. I'm not saying that letter proves anything by itself. I'm saying that if we're going to use the letter as evidence, then we should actually read them instead of repeating whatever interpretation is trending. I was still skeptical but then her mother posted a handwritten letter about missing Kim Sae ron, and I remember thinking, "Why is this being presented this way?" Like why post it online? I understand grief. I understand why a mother would be emotional after losing her child. But I'm sorry, it felt performative to me like when someone wants to cry so they start recording themselves. It just rubbed me the wrong way. One of my biggest issues with the entire situation was every time one question was raised, it seemed like another emotional claim or controversy appeared before the first question was properly answered. Eventually, people weren't even discussing evidence anymore. They were discussing which brands dropped him, which celebrities unfollowed him and whether those things somehow proved that he was guilty. Brands dropping someone isn't a court verdict. Celebrities unfollowing someone isn't evidence. And when those same celebrities are being attacked or threatened in their comment sections, an unfollow doesn't tell you what they actually know or think. There were so many other bizarre claims. Her family's lawyer playing her audio in a club. The alleged informant Kim Soohyun supposedly hired to kill someone. Claims about the FBI being involved. Cut up sausages being presented as though they represented injuries the informant had. Her naming a cat after one of his movies being treated as proof of their relationship. Pictures of a man being presented as Kim Soo hyun, only for the actual man in the photograph to come forward with proof that he wasn't him and yet people still refused to believe him. At some point, you have to ask yourself.. Are we looking at evidence or are we being emotionally manipulated by a constant stream of shocking claims? And this is where I want to make something very clear just because Kim Soo hyun is a Korean man in Korea does not mean he cannot be a victim. I live in a country where men are generally treated better than women and because of that, if a woman comes forward with a story, I will naturally listen to her first and care about what she's saying before I start thinking about the man's side. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Women deserve to be heard. But listening to a woman isn't the same thing as automatically believing every accusation made against a man.
I wouldn't be writing all of this if I hadn't actually sat down and tried to understand what happened. I read through the claims, looked at the evidence being presented, considered both sides, and questioned things that didn't make sense to me. If I were simply defending him because he's a man, I wouldn't have bothered doing any of that. I can believe women deserve to be heard while also believing men deserve due process. Those aren't contradictory positions. I'm not a fan of age gaps but we weren't there. We don't know exactly what happened between these two people. And 19 or 20 isn't 13 or 15. The repeated comparisons between those ages have been extremely misleading.

At the press conference involving the YouTuber and her family's lawyer, it was also claimed that eight close friends knew and were supposedly planning to write a statement. Eight people allegedly knew, yet her family didn't?
Again, I'm not saying that automatically proves anyone is lying. I'm saying these are inconsistencies that deserve to be questioned instead of dismissed.
Then Sulli's brother came forward with claims that were subsequently challenged and according to what was presented afterward, disproved. If someone has important information about a case this serious, why wait until much later to say it? And if the claim falls apart when evidence is presented, why should people continue treating it as fact? There were also claims that Kim Soo hyun forced sulli to do a nude scene. He's an actor, not the sole person responsible for production decisions. If she wasn't comfortable with something, her agency and the production team were also involved in those decisions. If someone is going to accuse him of personally forcing her to do something, there should be actual evidence connecting him to that alleged coercion. And then people started watching the movie again, and it reportedly reached the top four on Netflix during the controversy. But how is that supposed to prove anything? If anything, it shows how quickly controversy can turn someone's private life into entertainment.
That's also why I have a problem with how much of Kim Sae ron's private life was leaked. I understand wanting justice for someone you love. I understand wanting answers. But why does the public need to know every private message, photograph, relationship detail and piece of personal information about a deceased person? We know far more about her private life than we ever should have. The YouTuber also repeatedly claimed to have four laptops and three phones' worth of evidence. That was teased multiple times. But when it came time to actually submit the evidence for legal action, suddenly the supposedly overwhelming amount of evidence wasn't being presented in the way people had been promised. If you have that much evidence, why keep teasing it instead of simply presenting it through the proper legal process?
Then there were the videos from a past relationship that her parents apparently found. They admitted they didn't know about the relationship at the time but said she had told them he said he was going to marry her, so they stayed quiet. It makes no sense at all. Like why? How? 😵‍💫 They didn't have evidence again for the claim and never met him too but oh well 🤷 And this is where I have a huge problem with the words "groomer" and "pedophile" being thrown around so casually.
You can criticize the age gap without making a criminal allegation.
You can say, "I think this relationship was inappropriate," without saying, "He's a pedophile." You can say, "I think he handled the situation badly," without saying, "He killed her."
Those are completely different claims, and the more serious the accusation, the more evidence it requires. The same applies to the claim that he caused her death.
Kim Sae ron's death was tragic. There is no argument there. But saying "she died" is not the same thing as saying "Kim Soohyun caused her death." The second claim requires evidence. And if there was no established autopsy finding proving the cause of death being discussed, then people shouldn't fill in the blanks themselves and present their assumptions as fact. Even the alleged audio claiming to be Kim Sae ron and saying that they slept together when she was 13 raises questions when it contradicts the letter claiming they began dating when she was 15. Then there were text messages using a photograph that was already publicly available, presented in a way that made it look as though she had sent it to him.
If evidence needs to be edited, reframed or presented in a misleading way to make the accusation work, then people should be questioning the evidence not blindly defending the narrative.
The YouTuber also deleted posts after being challenged. Again, deleting something doesn't automatically mean you're lying but if you're presenting yourself as the person exposing the truth, why delete or change anything.
And honestly, the journalism surrounding all of this was disturbing too. It felt like there was a financial incentive to keep the story alive because outrage generates clicks, views, engagement and money. I've seen people say that anyone who supports Kim Soo hyun lacks empathy. But I don't think that's fair. Sometimes it feels like people are standing outside a house, looking through the windows, seeing one part of what's happening, and deciding they understand the entire situation without ever stepping inside to see the whole picture.
You don't have to support Kim Soo hyun to question the accusations against him. You don't have to dislike Kim Saeron's family to question the information they've provided. And you don't have to stop caring about victims simply because you're asking whether a particular accusation has actually been proven. I also don't like how the AI issue is being framed. The problem isn't simply whether AI was used. The bigger issue is the emotional manipulation surrounding the presentation of information. If someone understands how people respond to grief, outrage, fear, and scandal, they can construct a narrative that feels undeniable even when individual pieces of it don't actually prove what they're claiming. And this isn't the first time. Sulli, Kim Saeron and even the actress from It's Okay to Not Be Okay have experienced the cruelty that can come from online harassment. We know what people on the internet are capable of. We know how quickly strangers can turn a person into a target. That's why the whole thing makes me uncomfortable.
Kim Sae ron had already been subjected to horrible online treatment before this. I knew who she was before this controversy, and it wasn't because I was following her acting career. I knew her because of people online wishing death on her over her DUI. Think about how disturbing that is. People can contribute to someone's suffering online, move on with their lives, and then when something tragic happens, immediately look for another person to blame. That's exactly why I refuse to casually accept the narrative that "she died because of him" without evidence.
People also said Kim Soo hyun should have paid for her DUI, while there were reports that the financial issue had already been handled while she was still alive. And Gold Medalist is a company. Even if Kim Soo hyun is a major figure there, that doesn't mean he personally makes every decision or any at all. Companies have different people, departments and roles for a reason.
The same applies to the photograph that people claimed Kim Sae ron posted during his Queen of Tears era to get his attention. Some people then used his denial of their relationship as evidence that he must have been lying. But if he had admitted to a relationship during the height of a major drama, the conversation would obviously have shifted from the drama to his private life. We all know why celebrities choose to hide relationships and honestly, they have the right to keep parts of their lives private. They're human beings not public property.
At the end of the day, I'm not asking anyone to become a Kim Soo hyun fan. I'm not asking anyone to watch his dramas or ignore anything that makes them uncomfortable. I'm saying that if we're going to accuse someone of grooming, pedophilia, coercion, blackmail or even causing someone's death, we need more than emotion. We need evidence.
And if the evidence eventually proves that he did something wrong, then hold him accountable.
