The female lead doesn’t deserve the criticism she’s been getting.

My favorite drama this summer. The acting is solid, the production is polished, and while some may find the costumes a bit flashy, they actually fit the setting. The show delivers a clear message throughout. Some of the fight scenes are super cool, and the soundtrack is absolutely on point.

I’ve seen a lot of comments about people dropping the drama because of the female lead, but I personally find her setup reasonable. She’s actually the most clear-headed female lead I’ve seen in a book-transmigration storyline. For an ordinary person suddenly thrown into a fictional world, you can’t really expect them to treat the characters as if they were real people.

That said, the male lead’s character is perhaps too well written — he’s often the one suffering, his inner struggles are well portrayed, and his tragic backstory is fleshed out, while the female lead’s past and inner world remain underdeveloped. This imbalance makes many viewers feel more sympathy for him and resent her.

One strong point of the drama is its supporting cast, especially the female lead’s father, whose character is well crafted.

Pretty Faces Can’t Save a Broken Script

Ashes to Crown (Qiao Chu) had all the ingredients for a gripping palace drama—rebirth, political intrigue, and a clever female lead—but somehow turned them into a painfully underwhelming watch.

The biggest problem is the writing. The so-called “mind games” rely more on conveniently dumb opponents than genuine intelligence, while the pacing constantly swings between dragging and rushing. Characters are introduced with great potential, only to become plot devices with little depth.

The cast does what they can, and the visuals are polished, but neither can rescue a script that mistakes coincidences for clever storytelling.

Unconvincing Performances

I dropped The Princess Royal after a few episodes. At first, it looked promising—the cast was full of familiar faces, and the production quality was clearly impressive. The costumes, cinematography, and overall visual presentation gave the impression of a well-crafted historical drama.

Unfortunately, the acting, especially from the female lead, completely took me out of the story. Both protagonists are supposed to be people who have already lived one lifetime and are given a second chance, yet the female lead never convincingly portrays that maturity. Instead of someone shaped by years of experience and regret, she often comes across as immature and emotionally impulsive. That performance made it difficult to believe in the character’s backstory or emotional journey.

From what I’ve heard after dropping the drama, the later episodes place increasing emphasis on the second male lead, which left many viewers frustrated. While I can’t judge those episodes firsthand, it reinforced my decision not to continue.

In the end, The Princess Royal earns 7/10 from me mainly because of its polished visuals and high production value. Sadly, beautiful cinematography can’t compensate for weak storytelling and a lead performance that never convinced me.

When a Courtroom Drama Gets Everything Right

A surprisingly gripping legal drama that balances intelligent courtroom cases with one of the most compelling mature love triangles in K-drama. Unlike many legal shows that rely on melodrama, The Good Wife delivers well-written cases, morally complex characters, and excellent performances across the board.

Jeon Do-yeon is phenomenal as Kim Hye-kyung, a former lawyer rebuilding her life after her husband’s political and sexual scandal destroys their family. The romance is slow-burn, emotionally nuanced, and refreshingly adult.

A remake that not only respects its source material but also stands strongly on its own.

A touching story, but the plot holes are impossible to ignore

This is definitely a touching movie. The bond between the father and his daughter is incredibly emotional, and there are several scenes that genuinely broke my heart. The movie knows exactly how to manipulate your emotions, and honestly, it works. 🥲

However, once I stopped crying and started thinking about the actual plot, I realized there are way too many logical holes.

The biggest problem is that so many situations only happen because the characters conveniently behave exactly the way the script needs them to. The whole chain of events leading to the father being imprisoned feels increasingly unbelievable the more you think about it. Some characters make ridiculously questionable decisions, while certain problems could have been solved much more easily if anyone had simply communicated properly.

I also felt that the movie sometimes relies heavily on emotional manipulation to make us overlook the weaknesses in the story. The friendship between the prisoners is heartwarming, and the scenes involving the little girl are undeniably powerful, but some developments feel like they exist purely to make the audience cry rather than because they make sense within the story.

That said, I can’t deny that the movie is effective emotionally. The father-daughter relationship is the heart of the entire film, and the actors do a great job selling those emotional moments. By the end, I was absolutely devastated even while thinking, “Wait… but how does this actually make sense?” 😭

So, great emotional payoff, questionable logic.

I enjoyed the experience, but I probably wouldn’t call it a perfectly written movie. Bring tissues, but leave your brain at the door.

Dropped halfway through. I genuinely don’t understand the hype.

I really tried to understand why this drama is so popular, but eventually I just had to drop it halfway through.

The premise sounded interesting enough—a modern chef somehow ends up in the past and becomes the royal chef of a tyrant emperor. The cooking scenes are definitely the strongest part of the drama, and the food looks good enough to make you hungry. But unfortunately, pretty food alone couldn’t keep me watching.

My biggest problem is the story. The drama constantly feels like it’s trying too hard to be entertaining. There are plenty of comedic moments, but a lot of them didn’t land for me. The romance also feels rather forced, and I never really became invested in the relationship between the leads.

The female lead is energetic and capable, but after a while her character started to feel repetitive. Every problem somehow turns into another opportunity for her to show off her cooking skills, impress everyone, and magically solve the situation. The male lead isn’t much better. He’s supposed to be this terrifying tyrant, but the contrast between his “ruthless emperor” persona and the way he behaves around the FL didn’t really work for me.

And then there’s the pacing. Somehow the drama can feel both fast and slow at the same time. Things happen, but I didn’t feel like the story was actually moving anywhere meaningful.

Maybe I’m just not the target audience because I know this drama has a lot of fans, but I honestly couldn’t see what was so special about it. The production is pretty, the food looks amazing, and the leads are attractive, but none of that was enough to make me care about what happened next.

Dropped halfway. I genuinely don’t understand how this became such a huge hit. 😭

An Outstanding Adventure Undone by a Frustrating Finale

A Journey to Love completely deserves the hype it received when it first aired. The drama is gripping from the start, featuring a memorable cast of characters, exciting political schemes, and some of the best action choreography in recent costume dramas. Both the male and female leads are refreshingly competent—not just as fighters but as strategists. Instead of relying on misunderstandings or plot armor, they solve problems with intelligence, making their partnership one of the drama’s biggest strengths.

Unfortunately, the final episodes are where everything falls apart. A tragic ending isn’t the problem—this is a story set during wartime, so death is expected. The problem is how those deaths are written. The first one or two major sacrifices among the diplomatic mission feel meaningful and believable, but once the story shifts into the final war arc, the writing becomes increasingly forced. One particularly baffling scene has the second leads sharing a romantic horseback ride, smiling and enjoying a peaceful moment in the middle of a battlefield. The tonal shift is so strange that it completely breaks the immersion, only for the male supporting lead to die almost immediately afterward. It feels manufactured purely for shock value rather than as a natural consequence of the story.

The endings for the main couple are even harder to accept. Throughout the drama, both leads are established as exceptionally capable survivors. Yet the script suddenly bends its own rules just to ensure they cannot have a happy ending. The female lead, in particular, feels completely out of character. She spends the entire series proving her resilience, surviving impossible situations and living on despite unimaginable loss. Then, in the end, the drama suggests she no longer has the will to live simply because the male lead is gone. That decision contradicts everything the story had spent dozens of episodes building. Instead of feeling tragic, it feels unearned.

A Journey to Love remains an excellent drama for most of its run thanks to its engaging characters, thrilling action, and clever storytelling. If the finale had stayed true to the characters it had so carefully developed, this could easily have been a 9.5 or even 10. Instead, the final stretch sacrifices logic and character consistency for tragedy, leaving me with an 8/10 despite how much I enjoyed everything that came before.

Beautiful Cast, Disappointing Mystery

I dropped Coroner’s Diary after the second case because, as a mystery drama, it simply failed to keep me interested. The investigations felt bland, the cases lacked suspense, and the solutions were too straightforward to leave any real impact. There was little sense of tension or clever deduction, making each case feel surprisingly forgettable.

From what I’ve seen in later reviews and discussions, I don’t regret dropping it. Many viewers felt the writing became even weaker as the story progressed, with increasingly questionable logic and a portrayal of women that often leaned toward outdated stereotypes of the “ideal” traditional woman. Whether intentional or not, those elements made the drama even less appealing to me.

The only reason I’m giving it 6/10 instead of a lower score is the cast. The actors are undeniably attractive, and the production looks polished. Unfortunately, good-looking leads can’t make up for weak mysteries and disappointing writing. If you’re watching primarily for compelling detective cases, this one is easy to skip.

Too Slow to Stay Invested

I only made it through the first six episodes of this 24-episode drama, and despite genuinely trying to continue, the painfully slow pacing made it difficult to stay invested. By episode six, the story still felt like it was setting things up without delivering meaningful progress. The plot moves at an unusually slow pace, making even interesting ideas lose their impact.

The drama does have its strengths. The cinematography is pleasant, the overall visual style is decent, and there are a few humorous moments that help lighten the mood. However, those positives aren’t enough to compensate for how drawn-out the storytelling feels. For a series with only 24 episodes, I expected a much tighter narrative. Instead, it often feels as though very little actually happens from one episode to the next. Based on what I watched, it’s a 7.5/10—not a bad drama, but one whose pacing may test the patience of many viewers.

A Sharp, Addictive Start with a Softer Finish

Celebrity is one of those dramas that hooks you almost immediately. The opening episodes are fast-paced, suspenseful, and packed with twists that make it hard to stop watching. Its exploration of influencer culture, online fame, and the dark side of social media feels both timely and engaging, exposing how quickly admiration can turn into obsession and public opinion can be manipulated.

The drama maintains strong momentum for most of its run, balancing mystery with social commentary while keeping viewers guessing. However, the final stretch doesn’t quite match the intensity of the beginning. Some conflicts are resolved a little too conveniently, and the ending lacks the same level of tension that made the early episodes so compelling. Even so, the cast delivers convincing performances, the production is polished, and the series succeeds in delivering an entertaining thriller with a relevant message. Despite a slightly underwhelming finish, Celebrity is still an addictive binge-watch that’s well worth an 8.5/10.

Charming Leads

Gorgeous Dream is one of those dramas that grabs your attention much more easily than it manages to keep it. The first half is genuinely entertaining, with brisk pacing, an intriguing setup, and enough twists to make you want to keep watching. Although the script isn’t flawless and there are several noticeable logical inconsistencies, they’re not distracting enough to ruin the experience early on. Unfortunately, the second half takes a completely different direction. The storytelling style changes significantly, the pacing becomes uneven, and many plot developments feel less compelling than what the drama initially promised, making it lose much of its original appeal.

The biggest reason this drama remains enjoyable is the lead couple. Both actors deliver expressive performances, and their chemistry feels natural and effortless. Their interactions are fun, emotional when needed, and engaging enough to carry even the weaker parts of the script. While the supporting cast also does a decent job, it’s the two leads who make the series worth finishing. Overall, Gorgeous Dream isn’t a drama with the strongest writing, but its charismatic leads and entertaining first half make it a worthwhile watch—as long as you don’t expect the ending to live up to the beginning.

A Cozy Fantasy Romance That Charms More Than It Surprises

Warm on a Cold Night is a light fantasy romance with a refreshing premise, lovable leads, and an easygoing atmosphere. The chemistry between the main couple is sweet, and the mix of mystery, comedy, and romance keeps the story engaging, even if the plot isn’t particularly groundbreaking. While some cases feel predictable and the pacing slows in the middle, the drama makes up for it with its warmth, humor, and comforting vibe. A solid pick if you’re looking for a relaxing, feel-good costume romance.

Smart Writing, Weak Leads

The Glory stands out with a tightly written revenge plot that values strategy over cheap twists. The schemes are satisfying, the pacing is consistent, and most conflicts are resolved through intelligence rather than plot convenience.

Unfortunately, the lead couple struggles to match the quality of the script. Their performances often lack emotional weight, making key dramatic and romantic moments feel flatter than they should. Ironically, it’s the supporting cast that steals the spotlight, delivering far more convincing and memorable performances throughout the series.

The romance is understated, which works in the story’s favor, but the chemistry between the leads never fully lives up to the script’s potential.

Come for the clever revenge plot. Stay for the supporting cast. Just don’t expect the lead couple to carry the emotional core of the drama.

The Plot Needed Saving, Not the Protagonist

It’s 2025, and we’re still getting scripts written like this? The level of brain-dead writing is honestly impressive.

The writers seem determined to lower every supporting character’s IQ to room temperature just so the main character can look smart. The extras aren’t even characters at this point—they’re basically NPCs whose sole purpose is to push the plot forward, logic be damned.

I only made it halfway through before getting so annoyed that I had to come here and leave a review.

P.S. The female lead’s nose job looks so obviously fake that it kept distracting me from the actual movie.

Good soundtracks

Those who once enjoyed Love Between Fairy and Devil will likely find this drama appealing, as the storyline is quite similar. Both feature a charismatic, all-powerful male lead and a lazy, somewhat silly female lead.

It’s also understandable why the drama didn’t gain much popularity, even though the original novel was said to rank among the top in China. This type of storyline feels outdated. Viewers who prefer something simple, romance-focused, and not too deep will probably enjoy When Destiny Brings the Demon.

However, the weakness lies in the supporting cast. Just like in Love Between Fairy and Devil, the side characters are rather underwhelming. In fact, this drama handles them even worse — they lack depth and almost feel like NPCs whose sole purpose is to push the plot forward. At times, their actions come across as foolish and lacking any sense of humanity.
