In the novel, Xie Zheng returns to Huizhou (the ancestral home of the Xie family). There, he asks for his ancestors’ forgiveness because he has fallen in love with Changyu, who he believes at that time to be a descendant of the enemy responsible for his father’s death. The beating is carried out by Xie Zhong, an elder of the Xie family; this character does not appear in the drama.
