I'm not sure that I agree that this show's ratings were inflated. I think that when it comes to shows, people often vote with one of 2 categories that I view as quite honest, maybe not objective; 1. Personal enjoyment mostly 2. A slightly more objective scale that takes in to account things like acting, cinematography, script and so on. Ofcourse there's often a mix of both, and then there are those who rate the series a 10/10 simply because they're favourite actors are in it, or they just dunk on it for having actors or premises they don't like without trying it past ep 2. This is the type I actually find dishonest because you are not judging by the show's merit or what it made you feel.
I think for the most part people who rate this show do so based on the first category, and maybe a mix of the second. ThamMac aren't popular enough for a dedicated fanbase yet, and most of this show's initial fanbase have been AunStamp fans (who ofcourse are very dissatisfied with AunStamp's characters, so I don't think they are inflating. I know you might think that only rating a show based on your personal enjoyment and is dishonest, but as I've said before I honestly disagree. At the end of the day shows are supposed to make you feel, and I consider it a success if it does it, even if they build the entire set with green screens.
In the end though despite all my defence of this show, I agree with a lot of your comment. Even if a lot of people vote with my first category, a lot of them still go in expecting a rating heavy on no 2 with of course a bit of no 1 sprinkled in. "A niche show with such high ratings? Must be a fricking masterpiece, or at the very least on the level of bad buddy," And they u walk in and see something you personally would have rated a six at best, then you go back and give it a four because you are genuinely pissed off
