its weird people think he has no choice anywhere when he has been choosing since the beginning. if he truly didnt want it or like it he'd have walked away. he feels bad for her and promised her mom to escort her and felt a sense of responsibility towards her the way he felt about his men and apprentice. but unlike them the fml is assertive and has goals and opinions of herself and doesnt hesitate to speak them out and trust him with it, it creates a deeper bond when you entrust someone with your vulnerability and take actions instead of just following along.

i see them as more like a king and king maker but adjusted to realistic levels. she recognized someone who had all the good qualities of being one but unable to do so nor thinking of doing so. being the smart one doesn't mean they'd be able to do just anything or go anywhere. she's the one from the noble family, born and raised to perfection, knowing all their dealings and how things work in the high society, something the ml has no way of actually handling or navigating since he is a commoner outlaw. she knows both their limitations and also knows where her own hands cannot reach, so she chose the one who would complement her strengths and weaknesses the best and actually be her partner in this instead of dismissing her later or just being a thoughtless follower. both of them are quick to adapt and witty as well and they kinda met in the middle ground so i believe they are perfect for each other.
