only good in the first arc, downhill as it went on
The directing seems like it's trying to be like The Double, but with half the budget. Great cast, bad production. And we haven't talked about the scriptwriting yet.They use too much face close ups with unspecific intentions. In The Double, they use it to heighten the intensity of line delivery and the emotion being conveyed, meanwhile in this drama they're using it everywhere that it just fell bland as the episodes go. The beginning arc in Shazhou was done well, but as the drama progressed, quality goes downhill especially the script and editing. They didn't make me sympathize when something happened to Fuzhi, and I don't feel excited for the romance. Even Chancellor Xu ended up so bland and flat in the last 10 episodes, his character reduced to a simple 'Anti-Meng Ting Hui' plot device. He has so much potential that I genuinely hate him at the beginning and wish for his downfall. But after the Flood arc, I don't even care since he become so 1-Dimentional.
I mourn for the lost of potential that the first 10 episodes promised to us 😔 now I'll just wait for CYZ and WJY other upcoming projects.

clingy gf x clingier bf, the holy grail of butterflies
it's rare for me to get butterflies from modern c-dramas, but this one!!! they know what the audience is looking for: water in the desert.as a cinephile, what i love most is the tender directing. the camera will linger on gestures, frowns, twitch of fingers, shuffling shoes, flutters of eyelids, all subtle signs that heightened the intensity of things unsaid. the visual chemistry of the actors are through the roof, their masculine and feminine charm colliding and gives us no choice but to crush on them both. and the music carries their interactions really well.
the women in this story are portrayed so elegantly too. i like them all and they are so fashionable! Sun Yu with her dreams to make it in the big city felt so humane, especially alongside Zhitao with her heroine privileges. Lumi and her big sister energy that's so full of life. Tracy, Zang Yao, Kitty. i want to be surrounded by successful and beautiful women too haha
Luan Nian is perfectly casted. JBR adorable face trying to look stern in beautiful outfits is just recipee for disaster. someone saide he's not a red flag, but a chinese flag because it's a red flag but with five stars and I totally agree! i can see myself rewatching this in the future.
