It gets better, I swear!
I honestly liked the story of the second couple, Chen Yi and Ai Di, much more than the main pairing. Maybe it's because I'm just a huge sucker for the childhood-friends-to-lovers trope! I loved the dedication Chen Yi showed in trying to win Ai Di back after he was released from prison.
I'll admit I was a bit frustrated with Ai Di's attitude at first, but when you remember he was only 17 or 18 and dealing with that kind of rough environment, who wouldn't be? As for Chen Yi, I liked his character, but I felt like the show didn't portray his capability as a great leader enough. If they had given him the same level of focus and screen time as the main characters, it would have made it much clearer why the Boss ultimately chose him to manage the gang.
As for Rui—and apologies to those who love him—I felt like he didn't really do much... at least compared to the others. When you compare his actions to Zong Yi's sacrifices (even though Zong Yi's were for his father too), it felt like Rui fell a bit short in the stakes department. Of course, comparing everyone's trauma and sacrifices side-by-side isn't entirely fair since their situations are different, but that was just the vibe I got.
But overall, I really liked the story. The chemistry and the emotional beats hit the right spots, and if the actors ever star in a series together again, I'll definitely be watching!
