I checked out this drama because of her. I actually watched all her dramas. But she really fit this CSS character like a glove. She really did the comedy like the comedic queen she is, but her emotional scene has really leveled up and tug at your heartstring. I can see a lot of growth in her acting. Especially when she cry or sad, it's not like her previous dramas. Even when she cry in this series, there always this sense of restraint, self-pity, and indignancy. The only time she let go of her self-restraint and pour out her feelings is when she cried in LBY arms. Even when she cried in front of her dad, there always this air of rebellions and self-respect. But when she cried to LBY it's like a little puppy wanting to take shelter under your arms from the rain and asking you to protect her.

This arc here is separate from the revenge arc. I think you mistaken the Emperor intention. He already have the Minister of Justice (aka Yuan Shen) investigating the case, and his men out privately looking into. What can a 15 years old girl who doesn't even know martial art do? The area she want to go to is barbaric and lawless, and currently under siege from rebellious king. The country just got united less than 10 years, there are so many factions with private military, bandits, and lawless areas even he can't control. He obviously want to keep her in the palace to keep her safe - think about if you have a 15 years old daughter, would you be okay with her wanting to go to Taliban-control area in Afghanistan? You would obviously prefer to send well-trained detectives and soldiers there instead to investigate.

What the emperor doing right is now right. Because when they find the evidence that CSS father didn't deflect, the court will believe it. But if the Emperor showing favoritism now, even when they get evidence later, people will doubt the evidence and can even claim that the evidence was make-up, tampered with, etc... because the Emperor wanted to "excuse" the Cheng family.
Imagine if someone was caught in a murder, the police must take the person into custody first, question, and investigate to find evidence. Funny how you call 3rd prince personality look like he has Asperger syndrome. I have similar personality to him in real life. I work with underprivileged population - low income, single mom, mentally ill, seniors and even homeless people. But I’m like him - very black and white and by the book, direct and does not mince any words so I can sound quite harsh, so my coworkers ask me if I have Asperger’s syndromes. It’s no longer consider a diagnosis on its own and now fall under the Autistic umbrella. I went to get myself diagnose and the doctor say that people like me get mistaken for being under autistic umbrella because it look like we can’t read social cues but it’s worse than that, we don’t care, we know it but we violate it anyway and only utilize it when it absolutely necessary… and if we read the novel we know third prince and LBY is just putting on a show.

On the other hand I do appreciate her leading the family when needed. You can tell CSS take after her. The scene where she accepted the food in prison is cut to the scene CSS drinking the ginger tea, saying that you must eat well because there’s things to do. Mother daughter relationship can be so complicated.

LBY know very well he like her more, and that he need to continue earning her love. LBY has self pity too. Despite being powerful and domineering, he know he can’t compare to the powerless LY. He know where he don’t measure up ~ he’s scary, pessimistic, suspicious, domineering. And he know that he forced her to be with him. He wasn’t right to do that so he tried to make it up by being gentle with her, always apologizing first, take care of her and protect her because that’s what he capable of doing. That’s the only thing he can do. LY can marry HCJ and YS can marry another woman but for LBY, CSS is his only shot at love and possibly only happiness in this life. He’s really at her mercy. I find LBY kind of sad ~ on the surface he’s domineering but in reality he is always in CSS hand, even CSS know that. In reality, LBY lower himself in front of CSS, she hold the power in their relationship despite her always thinking he has power over her. He has material and social power, she has the emotional power over him. When she show him even a bit of love, he like a puppy wagging his tail fill with happiness.
Second I think even before the caning scene, CSS realize her hypocrisy in this incident. She demand independence from LBY but when LBY got in trouble she chided him for it and when he asked why she care, she said it’s because they a couple. The reality is that when you’re in love, you can get hurt but the person who love you is in even more pain. CSS argue that her problem is her own but that doesn’t stop LBY from being hurt that she was hurt. So when LBY get hurt, CSS go crazy and her heart ache. That what love is. It’s unreasonable and demanding. She need to at least recognize this illogical thinking of her. When she hurt she not the only one in pain.
I think CSS mom made a very keen observation in this episode. As much as CSS like to act reckless and willful, LBY is even worse. They are peas in the same pods. So when LBY said “You can continue being that CSS, and I’ll be THIS LBY!” He’s justified. Neither of them are perfect. They have their good and bad. So if CSS choose to act on the worst version of herself he can choose to act on his worst version of himself.
P.S. I don’t think LBY knew the beating was fake. Frankly he knew what he did is not something he would get in trouble for but the Emperor would need to display some kind of “punishment” to at least save face. In the novel, he only realize the beating was lighter after he got hit. He still got beat up pretty bad, and bled a lot. He just didn’t get the kind that could make him disabled. He got the same type that CSS got in the earlier episode from her mom.
I think ZLS was teasing on purpose. This is Wen Emperor. Wen is the title name of this Emperor. Huang Di = Emperor. So ZLS shorten Wen Huang Di = Wen Di, which sound like an English name Wendy, and it stuck because it’s funny. She also called him Wendy in the live chat she did with WL while WL call him his rl name.
