I think you might be mistaken. The crazy mother is the real dad's sister. She is called Lady Huo, and she preferred the Huo General as her older brother. Just rewatching the series from the start and knowing LBY better now I picked up a couple things I missed before.
Ep2: it’s cute how CSS’s dad said the same thing LBY ended up saying. He said only marry his wife and no one else, even when his mom was against it because his wife was a divorcee whose household fell apart and lost everything. CSS picked a husband who is just as devoted as her own father.
Ep1: The maternal granduncle said CSS is uneducated and know nothing about family live and familial piety. In the same episode, LBY guard said that the rumors that LBY is unfilial toward his dad is spreading wild in the court, and LBY said people gossip anyway. Funny enough they both have the same reputation yet we tend to forget because LBY is so much more powerful.
Ep1: LBY visit Cheng family and was testing CSS dad. We now know LBY hate it when incompetent people is in charge and get away with crime because of their “family” help, so LBY was definitely impressed with CSS dad and with CSS. “Like father, like daughter!” He said. He meant it well when he compliment CSS - he find that kind of quality admirable, but CSS who is full of thorn misinterpret his words. Knowing his revenge plan and who eventually support we know he really value this quality above all else.
Ep1: CSS indirectly help LBY find the leads that help him take his revenge. LBY said this case has been a “thorn” in his heart for the past decade. How poignant is it that CSS is the one that help him take off this thorn and he ended up giving her his heart.
Ep5: When CSS family returns it the first New Year she celebrate with her family. When LBY saw her carriage he decided to celebrate NY for the first time. How poignant it is for them to be celebrating such an important festival for the first time in their life at the same time despite both of them already 15 and 21 respectively. CSS finally have her family around and LBY finally open his heart to having a family because NY celebration is a family event. LBY never celebrating before show that he never considered himself as having a family. But his heart began to changed after he met CSS. His cold heart began to crack and they haven’t even actually see each other face to face yet.

Wu Lei probably looking at the script and read the novel ( I assume). The LBY in the drama is a lot more gentler and "romanticize" to be a more "dreamy" man. Even Wu Lei realize that. But he's the one playing the character so he know what that character is really like/suppose to be like.

While we are being sold a dreamy romance and many swooning moments, let's not forget that either of our leads are perfect, and this is not a perfect romance. Both LBY and CSS has their strengths and flaws, and they are compromising and learning to become a better version of themselves through this love journey. Neither of them are deserving/less deserving of the other because while LBY is great, CSS is pretty great too.
It's easy to get blindsided when we see all the things LBY did for CSS. But he already in love with her at this point, while she is yet. He saw the "greats" in her already, as well as her flaws and he embraced all of it. But CSS is only beginning to see some of his "greats" and she have not even seen all of his "flaws". They are at different point of their love journey. LBY fall first, but CSS will fall harder later on.
Let's not forget, while LBY did many things for CSS, his flaws is also several times more serious than CSS. He has a complicated family situation, as well as his revenge she knew nothing about. CSS has her flaws but they are benign to him, but CSS is directly taking risk and being harm "learning" about LBY flaws. Being with him put CSS in more danger than LBY being with CSS. He get a lovely, cute family, CSS got thrown in a lion's den. Totally not the same ballpark.
Additionally, just because LBY did all these things for CSS doesn't mean CSS has to reciprocate his love. If LBY was the second lead, if he was evil or uglier then we would find his action annoying, desperate and "get in the way" of our ML. In my perspective, it's only right that LBY do all this and more, he's asking more out of CSS than she asked out of him, and she didn't even "ask". But in the realm of love, it's not so easy to calculate. Who do more, and what. Love is just Love. Once they get to that point - the point of who's more deserving is moot. They both pour a lot into this relationship.
In the novel she is, also older, but since it's a banned topic in China we just get a handy teenager instead.

5th princess is not doing it out of jealousy about LBY. She bullying CSS because she’s a brat - but it’s also because the Empress like CSS more. In an earlier episode she don’t like LBY either because she feel the Emperor and Empress like him more. As a plot - LJT is used as a cover for LBY to pretend he’s over CSS. That way LBY feel that the royal family is okay with CSS moving on and they will be less worri about him.
As a person, LJT is the embodiment of everything he hate in a woman. LBY don’t care that CSS is scheming because he know she doing it to pursue freedom. But LJT is scheming to pursue power. She pretend to be meek, virtuous and obedient to have a “good” reputation. So she’s fake. Which make LBY dislike her even more. In contrast CSS is real. So in away you can see LJT as the mirror opposite of CSS. What happened when a conniving, poor women pursue power at the expense of everyone else. CSS is scheming but she never risk anybody but herself, and she kept it real.
As much as I love this drama, how episode 34 went down is simply unrealistic. That CSS or Zisheng would hold that…
Lmao I mean the more unrealistic thing is that emperor would stay up all night worrying about LBY marriage in the first place. Since they already take it there - everything is fair game. Frankly speaking, LBY is more important to the Emperor than any of his son. So even if Emperor miss out on the others, he won’t miss out on LBY.

Drama writer don’t understand the CSS character. She don’t make trouble for trouble sakes. She always plan. Not all her plans are complex but so far they always close loopholes or make sure that it doesn’t affect her family much. So this “tiger seal” arc is so off - it almost feel like CSS isn’t being CSS. I rmb CSS in the novel never really care for Crown Princess that much and she is very good at read people vibe. The CSS I’m so 33 seem kinda “stupid” and get mislead by others to be frank.
Ep 33: I think the tiger seal deviate from the book. I defended CSS in the last episode, but I have to call her out on this one. I don’t judge based on person but based on behavior. CSS is beyond stupid for faking the tiger seal and this is VERY out of character for her. She’s a very protective person and her action has been foolish in the past but never stupid. This time she put not only herself but her entire family at risk. CSS is calculating. She know the risk she take so this is a HUGE oversight to see CSS taking this risk. Faking the tiger seal is treason - enough to get her entire family beheaded. And this doesn’t count that the seal is missing. I can’t fathom the logic behind her doing this. The drama really dropped the ball on this one. CSS may scheme but she would never let her family get hurt so to see her do this just to help the Empress is so wrong.

A bit off topic but I’ve been reading the novel here and there while waiting for new episode and I realize every character comment on how pretty our CSS is? No one said she is THE prettiest girl but everyone admit that she’s pretty. Imma do a head count, feel free to chime in

Other guys (in the novel a lot of people show up to LBY house after the fall off the pagoda to visit him so when CSS show up, they all think she’s pretty and felt envious toward Lou Yao - in the novel she still engaged to LY at this point) 5. Other female characters - Wen Xin (Wang Lin mom), Lou Ji Tong (she said it at almost the end of the novel how despite CSS being born so beautiful her parents never intended to use her beauty to marry her off so they can get higher connection)… Anyone else I forgot? Ofc I know all 3 of her suitors think she pretty. That goes without saying.
