I think he played the classic kdrama role of the 3rd leg in the love triangle or in-law that becomes evil than returns neutral/good at the end. I think in this story context, he prob started to like his colleagues and also realize he had his own positives to move up without having to sink the others using sketchy tactics.
I don't think the mom is an actual completely Evil person to go about an kill. Think her ultimate goal of getting her to quit was to offer her a lucrative deal to send her away to boston. I am sure there are other rich people that would do that though in real life and in dramaland. Her having a child out of wedlock is an open-secreat anyways.

The ML could of had a bigger role if they had him doing more "investigating" like some of the earlier episode. Also i felt they also sideline the other attorneys because every episode just ended with the magical whale thing guiding the heroine to victory.
