They don't just simply dispense the drugs; they look to see if it will counteract with the patient's drug history or medical history. That's why they are also doctors - they get a Doctorate of Pharmacy, just an fyi. Now, if a doctor prescribes a medication without the pharmacist being involved, and something goes wrong, all that falls on the doctor as they are the primary caregiver and they were the one to make that decision. However, if a doctor makes the wrong prescription and the pharmacist dispenses it without failing to notice the drug interactions, then the liability falls on them both. As I said, they are responsible for patient health just as much as the doctor. If they fail to recognize something wrong, they too can get their license taken away. A pharmacist can also prescribe medication; in fact, they know more about drugs a lot more than a regular physician. One spends four years on it, and the other spends a unit or two in their overall four years. My mother is a pharmacist, so I know a lot about their line of work, and I am pre-med.
