This is the best historical kdrama I've ever watched! It's a beautiful show, and Woo Do Hwan had my entire heart in this! The soundtrack was amazing, the only thing I didn't like as much was the ending but it is definitely worth watching!

Started good, but ended weakly

I walked into true beauty not expecting much, but right off the bat I was introduced to a colorful cast, big personalities, and an easy to follow and pleasant storyline. I began enjoying it a lot and it quickly rose to become one of my favorite kdramas. In the beginning what charmed me about true beauty is that it knew it was cliche and used that to its comedic advantage and didn't take itself too seriously which allowed me to enjoy the cliches. This ended up being its undoing later, but I'll get to that.

also one thing i'll (SPOILER) is that I try not to fall for the second lead/ship him with the female lead because they usually don't get the girl, but HAN SEO JUN. I seriously fell in love, he quickly became my favorite kdrama character EVER. And his chemistry with the female lead jugyoung (gayoung) was off the charts, seriously one of the best I've seen in kdramas period. It made watching true beauty ten times better for me :)

But alas the things that made true beauty charming didn't last. You see true beauty never had outstanding writing, but it was enjoyable and it made sense, plus the characters and ost made up for it, but about halfway through the show true beauty started to go downhill in the writing and production. The writing increasingly didn't make sense and had characters act weirdly, it even made characters I liked in the beginning dislikable for me : / an example is with the male lead suho who i adored episode 1-5, liked episode 6-7, felt okay with ep 8, and straight up disliked ep 9 to the end. It's even worse when you used to like the character or especially when he is the main character. (SPOILER) Just the way writers wrote him as possessive, and downplayed it as romantic did not sit right with me, the way the writers wrote him it seemed as if he was more focused or acted/thought that "jugyoung is mine" which I hate that mentality. Even if the writers didn't have him explicitly say it, his actions implied it. So sadly that ruined his character and the main ship for me : /

not to mention that this show is heavily promoted as a love triangle but it is not! it is very much centralized on suho and jugyoung, and the writers do not give seojun a real chance (like bringing in suho between every seojun jugyoung scene lol), but the most disappointing thing for me was that they did not include the seojun jugyoung relationship from the webtoon. also if the time skip was gonna happen and they kept seojun's feelings idk why they didn't go that route (honestly they were probably too scared to haha). but honestly its disappointing that they removed an entire relationship (and the only one) from the webtoon to the drama. :(

ok now onto the title 'true beauty'. what initially attracted me to the webtoon was the title and the concept of inner beauty and societal standards and what not. but in reality that is not the real focus of the drama. the drama focuses more on the love triangle, and at most points inner beauty is pushed to the beginning and the climax. i would've liked to see an actual journey and focus on the growth, but the show didn't let us see jugyoung's growth and instead wrote a rushed sudden confidence burst. (now i'm all for gained confidence), but the message wasn't there. for people who relate to jugyoung i don't think that it portrayed realistic growth or self-love. it is hard it is a process, it doesn't happen overnight, and most importantly it doesn't come from what others tell you (though compliments are nice) it comes from accepting yourself and forgiving yourself which is HARD. just writing this because the title indicates much larger of a focus than there actually is in the show, and there is no strong or impactful message on "true beauty".

lastly the writing. i mentioned earlier that in the beginning the show didn't take itself seriously in a charming way. later on that ended up biting it back because it started taking itself seriously in the worst way. the writing became cliche and it didn't make sense. they would create drama and drag it over four episodes only to leave the last two for a rushed ending. the show was doing so well with pacing that it really was remarkable how bad the pacing got.

the worst part about true beauty is that it started off so strong but started downward spiraling to a weak ending. if the ending and later half of the drama was better this would probably be one of my favorite kdramas ever.
though I do not regret the experience because through the first half of the drama I met many loveable characters, cried, laughed, and enjoyed myself :) i would suggest watching true beauty, just be prepared for a lotta frustration towards the end lol

ps: if you're like me and fell in love with han seojun (who wouldn't lol) then be prepared for heartbreak and frustration because tvn walked all over his character and gave him a mediocre but honestly unhappy ending (: lol not to be pessimistic though y'all have good taste ;)

This was the second kdrama I ever watched, and still one of my favorites! Dream High holds such a special place in my heart. First of all I love the story and concept of an arts school that produces the next top performers, and the casting was amazing. I mean talk about an all-star cast (especially before a lot of them really began to shine), we have Suzy, Kim Soohyun, IU, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, and more. Literally all are such legends, and casting IU in this was a literal godsend I loved her character so much and her voice was beautfiul! I loved Suzy so much in this her character was so fun to watch on her growth, and her chemistry with the other actors was very cute! Soohyun was the most adorable ever I LOVE his character so much and his chemistry with Suzy was the best! Taecyeon's character from the start had my heart, and Wooyoung killed it with his character too! This show had such great early 2010's vibes that I loved, and the incorporation of music made it 10 times better! If you're a fan of kpop I definitely would suggest this kdrama to you since it should be more catered to your tastes. I have rewatched this kdrama sooo many times and it never gets old, it just has this charm to it that I'm in love with!

Great show but wasted opportunity

I'll start off with the most important question: is it worth it? My answer is yes it is worth it, but it could have been a LOT better than it was if the writers made different decisions story and character wise (i'll get into that later). Overall the acting was great from Lee Jong Suk and Kang Sora, and the story was very interesting from the beginning to the almost end, but I am unsatisfied with some of the story choices.
Mainly with the couples. The chemistry between LJS and KS was undeniably strong, I was literally drawn to them and that was the main if not only reason that I was so engaged in the show. On screen it almost seemed obvious that they had mutual feelings for each other, but instead the writers decided to have him choose his first love, and while they were cute when they were younger, their chemistry was a lot less and more bland then his with KS. That was just poor writing in my opinion , and it just makes LJS's character seem like an asshole for flirting with KS when it seemed he had more feelings for her then he did for his first love. I'm still waiting to see LJS and KS on another show together...

CUTEST SHOW EVER

If you're looking for a cute fluff romance, this. is. it. Actually though, my heart combusted so many times from the cuteness of this couple. I loved the whole high school arc, it was so adorable, but after they graduated the pacing of the show became a little wack. I still enjoyed the show because I loved the characters, but all of the time skips were all over the place, but we still had a happy ending I guess. The theme song was the cutest thing ever and perfectly described their relationship. I also really liked the side characters, but they did them dirty with their storylines. Overall it was a cute show that I really enjoyed!

BEST KDRAMA OST EVER

The soundtrack is so beautiful literally every song slaps! The story was very beautiful and acting was on point! All of the actors fit their characters so well, and there were no wasted characters. Still amazed at how each song fit the emotion of each scene so perfectly! The main actress really shined in this kdrama, she's very talented. And the main actor, L, really showed his talents, so proud! This was like a once in a while kdrama that had everything right: the story, pacing, actors, characters, ost, fx, and more.

BEST KDRAMA EVER

That title wasn't even an understatement. It's Okay to Not Be Okay is hands down the BEST kdrama I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of kdramas. Honestly if I even wanted to find a flaw with this show I couldn't because it was so masterfully created in every way. I'm still blown away by this show and how powerful it is. The messages they gave every episode, and the amount of topics they covered. Also how well they paced everything which included several mystery plotpoints, romance, and multiple romantic and platonic relationships. Each and every character had a purpose and message even if it was revealed later in the show. All of the characters had great character arcs with no real unanswered questions. Each episode was able to top the next to my surprise (the tears and smiles were endless with this one :) The soundtrack fit this show SO perfectly. AND DON"T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE FAIRYTALES. The writers are literally genius for that aspect, each fairytale had such a powerful message and related to the story so well CHILLS. Also the mother storyline was actually quite satisfying. They didn't try to overdo her character because even as she was the amount of trauma she caused on Moonyoung was astronomical especially since she was a kid. I love how our perspective of her changes as we see her from child Moonyoungs memories and how Moonyoung sees her now. THE ACTORS MY GOD. Every single one of them killed it, and our main three shined so much. This by far my favorite drama from all of them. OH JUNG SE IS SUCH A TALENTED ACTOR GIVE THIS MAN AN OSCAR, AND GIVE ONE TO SOOHYUN AND. SEO YEJI AS WELL, IN FACT JUST GIVE THE WHOLE CAST EVERY SINGLE AWARD. Anyway haha, moving on from actors the crew was phenomenal. Cinematography was breathtaking the directing was seamless, I LOVED the editing, and the writers literally blew me away with this phenomenal story. They really outdid themself in the best way possible. This was really a one of a kind show that is extremely hard to find. Honestly its one of THE BEST shows I have ever watched let alone kdramas. I could talk about this show on and on, but I'll end this here. If you haven't watched this show you are doing yourself a HUGE disservice, and if you have watched it, please tell me how I'm ever supposed to get over this amazing show that is "It's Okay to Not be Okay". No but really, I'm never going to get over this show.
