One point to clarify, I am not saying that queer dramas are not worth watching unless there is a kiss, what I…
I mean, if you're arguing that some people just love to see people kiss and make out and have sex and they don't think that a drama is worth watching if those things aren't in it, I mean that's up to those people's personal taste. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but I agree that doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of the drama, just the taste of the viewer. On the other hand, I am very sensitive to straight people making money off of queer people. In this show specifically, they teased the kiss multiple times (in the library, the kiss to the ear in the last episode). So it is clear to me that the producers understood that most people expect romantic partners to kiss, but instead of showing it authentically, they teased it and then were too cowardly to follow through. That makes me not want to support the drama because it feels exploitative. Give us your money but hide expressions of your love.
Queer people kiss in real life. If you make a show about queer people and are too cowardly to have them kiss,…
One point to clarify, I am not saying that queer dramas are not worth watching unless there is a kiss, what I am saying is when it's clear that the kiss was purposefully removed or avoided to appease heterosexual sensibilities, that is a problem. If there is a reason in the plot why the characters don't kiss, then that is great and should be explored. I agree, that there should be more representation of people from all parts of the queer community. But it is very clear to me that the reason there was no kiss in this BL, despite the fact that a previous commenter mentioned there is a kiss in the bonus material in the manhwa, is because the producers want to capitalize on the popularity of BL dramas right now while still protecting the presumably straight reputations of the main actors
It's literally an adaptation of a manhwa that had no kisses on it, they were faithful to the original material…
Nope, I don't know a single queer person (and I know a lot of queer people) who don't kiss their partner. If a media company is going to portray queer people, they need to show queer people expressing their love in the normal way that people do that with, as Disney has shown us, true love's kiss.
If the manhwa is like that, it has the same problem as the series, print or tv, same situation.
Are you really trying to tell me that you *don't* think they refused to show a kiss because of conservatism, anti-gay sentiment in Korea, the fear on the actor's part that it might damage their career, etc...? Are do you really think they had some artistic reason for it??? Art should be brave, love should be brave. This ending stinks of fear.
Queer people kiss in real life. If you make a show about queer people and are too cowardly to have them kiss, you are just trying to bilk the LGBTQ out of our money. It's gross, stop doing it. I know Korea is conservative, but not so conservative they don't want to make money off our backs. If you are one of those people saying, "they don't have to kiss!", well, you are essentially saying that you support the idea that queer people kissing is so shocking that it needs to be censored, removed, and/or purposefully left out (so the straights can make money off us but still keep their career afterwards). Nope, it's a cowardly cop out.
If you liked the show, cool. I like a lot of it too. But as a queer person, I find the whole ending completely a let down. And we all know that if it had a been a straight show, they would have kissed.
Well, that was a lot of wasted potential at the end. I loved their complicated relationship, and I was excited for the resolution, but it limped to the finish line and fell flat right before crossing. That was almost as irritating as Tine and Sarawat's high five ending. Maybe there will be a movie version with a not terrible ending???
As a 39 queer person, this show had the maturity I've been looking for. I get that for 17 year olds, it's probably…
I don't think you get to be the arbiter of whether the series is well written or not. You can certainly say you didn't like it which you have done, and other people are certainly free to disagree with you, as I and many other people have done. We got it, you didn't like it.
Came here after finishing this series and was surprised by some of the negative comments. Are we just getting…
As a 39 queer person, this show had the maturity I've been looking for. I get that for 17 year olds, it's probably not going to resonate as much because it focuses on life issues beyond where they are. But for me, this was perfect (except for the weird sound thing in ep 6 hahaha)
I'm 5 minutes into the first episode and not enjoying the casual homophobia... He dreams he kissed a man and then scrubs his mouth??? I mean, I was 12 in 1995, so I can confirm that people were definitely homophobic, but someone tell me, before I keep watching this, is that going to be a continuing thing? Does he stay acting homophobic? If so, I'm gonna give this one a pass...
So, in the movie Garden State, Natalie Portman's character is whimsical, fun, seemingly carefree, adventurous and lively, and Zach Braff's character is a sad sack, and Natalie Portman puts in all this energy helping him see the beauty in life or whatever, but then of course it turns out she has cancer and her seeming carefree nature is actually a mask for her fear of death, etc... Her character's personality became known as the "manic pixie dream girl".
Cher's character (minus the cancer, hopefully) gives me essentially the same vibe. He is doing a lot of emotional labor to help his boss, which his boss interprets romantically (and maybe Cher does too, it's unclear). Cher talks about same-sex relationships in an abstract, supportive way, but also in a way that makes it seem like he has never thought about being in a same-sex relationship. And then they kiss.
I have mixed feelings. I wish we had a little bit more context (maybe a few scenes of Force being an asshole boss) and a little more time (even a montage of them talking at night, because how many times have they talked at night now? It seems like only once, but maybe more? unclear).
I like Cher, his character is very fun. I feel like Force's character is lacking depth right now. What is his tragic backstory? Give us a flashback or something that better explains it.
I am enjoying the show, but I think it is not living up to its potential. I want more.
The acting is stiff, but damn, Uea is going through it! At first, I was like, why are you so stuck up??? But then, as we learned more about his past, I was like, I am so sorry sir, it is amazing that you are a functioning adult! Be nice to him, King!
It was cute, better than I expected. I thought Force was way too stiff, but Book (Cher) was fun as the oblivious, over-the-top ray of sunshine. It's kind of giving me manic pixie dream (boy) vibes.
