A webtoon made into a drama, literally

When I first heard of the premise I was so confused but intrigued. A girl turning into a chicken nugget is such a weird plot but that's the reason why I decided to check out the drama when it came out. At first it started off so weird I was about to drop the drama, but I decided to give it a chance and it's one of the best decisions I've made. I'm so used to all the melodramas and intense stories from kdrama these days that I expected the same but boy was I wrong. This is whole ass gag drama, 90% comedy. If you're an avid webtoon reader, try to imagine you're favourite gag webtoon, I'm not talking about comedy, I'm talking about full gag like whacky content. Now imagine that, in a kdrama. That's exactly what Chicken Nugget is. Get ready cause my review is going to be long (without spoilers). Just to note, there are 10 episodes but each episode is less than 40mins so if you're a avid kdrama watcher, this is about 5 episodes of your regular drama 🫡

Acting:

Star studded cast. If you've watched kdramas then you know exactly how insanely talented the cast is. They got big names in this show as well. It's so well acted that I forgot that they were actors for a moment cause I was too absorbed into their characters. Geniunely, acting is a solid 10/10

Story:

It was hilarious. Starts of strange and confusing but as you continue watching it just becomes funny. Like I had to pause and replay some scenes cause I was cackling with laughter. It's not your standard kdrama comedy where a good looking guy makes some smart jokes. Nope. Be prepared to see weird ass comedy, creative lines, and unpredictable storyline comedy. It's not all hilarious though, at times it gets serious and I even got emotional (very reminiscent of webtoons).

Music:

Most of the music is from a character in the show. I won't spoil much but the lyrics are kind of funny but I'm not someone who's super into music when I watch dramas so I don't have much to say

Rewatch value:

I 100% would rewatch it when I'm bored. I tend to re-read gag webtoons often when I'm bored just to laugh and this drama is a literal moving version of a webtoon so I definitely will rewatch it every now and then .

Overall:

If you're debating on watching the drama, I highly suggest watching it. You can stagger when you want to watch each episode since the content of the story isn't that heavy to the point where cliffhangers makes you feel like jumping. I promise this drama will give you a good laugh

Entertaining but a bit too long

6.5 rating might put you off but it's actually entertaining to watch to an extent. Many people are taking this show seriously so let me lay it out for you guys. Warning, might have a few spoilers

Script:
Now zombieverse isn't a drama, it's technically a variety show. However it's more of a mix between a drama and a variety show. There is a basic script that all the celebs have to follow but anything more than that basic script is all their own genuine reactions/decisions. Dex's rope scene is an example of this (even the zombie forgot he was a zombie for a moment). Also people seem to be upset that it has funny bits ......this is a variety show, it needs to be funny to be entertaining. That's the whole reason why there's a bunch of comedians/known entertainers in the cast.

Actors:
A lot of people have a lot to say about the actors and honestly, as a third person watching this in the comfort and safety of my blankets, yeah some were annoying. The only useful ones were Dex, Siyeong, and Dindin. Hongchul was helpful here and there as well. The others were there for reaction sake. And yes Narae was in fact quite useless and annoying, with her injured leg and all. However, keep in mind that they're reactions to the zombies are unscripted so they're genuinely getting freaked out and mind you the zombie actors were so good it would be freaky even for me to see irl. So while we can get annoyed at the useless if most of the actors, it's probably just how they act when in fear. Not everyone can get up and lead like Dex or Siyeong (mind you Dex is an ex- udt/military man and Siyeong is an amateur boxer so they're used to working in high tense situations)

Music:
Yeah idk what music there was🤷

Rewatch:
Nah I wouldn't rewatch unless I really wanted to rewatch for Dex or for Siyeong. It's like a one time watch honestly

Closing statements:
If you have nothing to watch go for this. It'll keep you entertained. The only thing I kind of disliked was that I felt it was too long. Instead of 8 episodes I think this should have ended in 6. Almost felt draggy at one point. Adding new types of zombies or new evolution of zombies would have been interesting to see. Comedy bits are sprinkled here and there but it's funniest when the actors break characters (couldn't stop laughing at Patricia's reactions to Johnathan). Overall a 6.5/10. Would love to see a second season especially after that cliffhanger

A story about a loser becoming a killer

"Premise starts off strong. I know people say ep 1 is boring in the beginning but that's just to set the scene of who Tang I, what kind of person he is, so that we can understand the decisions he took to become who he is now. I'd say the first 3-4 episodes were really strong cause you see Tang still battling with himself after every murder, his headspace completely fucked, first with guilt, later with fear of getting caught. Like all thriller dramas, I'd say ep 5-7 were the weakest in terms of keeping my attention. I did enjoy seeing Tang becoming a much more cold hearted person, less cowardly, but nonetheless it did bore me a little. Last episode came back strong especially the ending.

Loved the ending. Cause in this drama there's no rooting for Tang. Sure maybe the first murder which was accidental and in self defense, you might hope that Tang escapes, but after that.....you slowly see him for what he is, a psychopath. Yeah sure the show potrays him having this "power" where he gets goosebumps when he sees a bad person and decides to kill them. However go about it chronologically and you'll realise how psychopathic it is. Tang meets someone by accident, gets goosebumps for no fucking reason, takes it as a sign to murder them which he does, and by a stroke of luck said person was also evil in their own right. Tang was never well in his head and the ending where he comes back and does the same thing again when he realised that he'd been clear of any murder charges just goes to show how he has no remorse for his actions. He found his purpose in life and that is to kill. He's just lucky that everyone he killed was evil and he always got away with it. It's why we see Tang getting goosebumps when he sees himself in the mirror. His own "powers" are telling him that HE deserves to get killed.

I do wonder what would have happened had Tang killed someone who was completely innocent based on a broken radar like Song Chon did. Would it have broken Tang or would Tang have deluded himself into thinking he did right?" (Taken from a comment I made for discussion purposes)

I'm terms of acting, was NOT disappointed. We're talking about some of the best actors in the K industry of course the acting was TOP NOTCH. A lot of the show is carried by the actors themselves, not necessarily the plot cause the general plotline is not that complex when you think about it. But this is the same for the director's other famous work, stranger from hell. A straightforward plot that was carried by insanely good acting to the point where it made people uncomfortable enough to not watch the drama when it first aired on TV (yes this was a real thing which is why ratings were a bit low at that time)

Cinematography, loved it. At first I was super confused with he perspective changes, from going into Tang's mind Vs reality but once I got used to differentiating what's real and what's fake I was able to appreciate it more. When you think about it, the reason why Tang became a serial killer likely had to do with the fact that he couldn't really differentiate reality from his delusions or god complex...

Anyways enough ranting but I'd say it's a good watch and I enjoyed it. Fell a little below my expectations cause I thought it'd be tiki taka so a back and forth of Tang outsmarting Nangam but Tang survived our of pure dumb luck but the story was still intriguing.

The acting for this was really great. All of them felt exactly like their characters from Wei Ying's extroverted personality to Lan Zhan's "my eyes speak more than my mouth". All the actors perfectly suited their characters which makes watching the untamed so much more enjoyable. The music was also perfect for the drama as it represents the characters and their situations very very well. The drama shows how in life there isn't someone who is only evil and someone that is only good. It's shows the grey area of certain situations and characters in an understandable way. Characters like Xue Yang who have a complex story where you can't help but pity him and feel bad for him despite his evil deeds. I'm glad that the drama didn't really deviate from the novel and the romance/bromance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan is very apparent in the drama.

My only problem (minor problem) with the drama is that I didn't like how the entire past was shown in about 20+ episodes in the beginning rather than how the novel did it where it was flashbacks whenever Wei Ying got reminded of something. I personally liked that more than the drama but it wasn't a major issue. The untamed is a great drama to watch if you want to laugh and cry (Yi City arc breaks my heart everytime) and is worth rewatching again.
