I cannot say how they compare to Meatbun or TJQ since I haven't read their stuff, but for Priest, I dropped Silent Reading because I didn't enjoy the diction and I got bored of the story, I dropped JitD similarly, but I finished KoD, even so, that's hardly any indicator of writing ability. KoD is not necessarily lighter, it just includes more humor, but the level of death and violence is basically the same. I've never found KoD or TS scary though, so can't vouch for whether it's 'horror'.
Off topic: is there any Chinese novels that don't have homophobic parents or family obstacles?
I mean, TECHNICALLY Tian Guan Ci Fu, Xie Lian's parents are just sort of by the by, minor characters. No one else has any parents to be concerned about for reasons of them being...well, gods. Anyway, it's an amazing novel, best of MXTX's work imo. I will always recc it.

The show includes offscreen relationship building. It's not day by day or play by play, there are time lapses and things that are implied to happen that are not shown to us, the characters essentially 'living their lives'. It can be assumed XS and SW have texted or chatted on the phone as friends do to keep each other updated.

Because censorship has been the cause the previous forced bad endings in most Chinese BLs. There is no censorship here, and the original work had a 'happy ending'.

I would recc reading it, if you are a fan of reading. That said, finish the show too if you can, it's a gem in and of itself. They did a great job with this adaptation, even though it differs from the novel in some key ways.

It was a proper kiss in the novel, they kissed full on (it was hot, ngl) and THAT'S why WS got jelly and it was a catalyst for his and CC's issues. There's more to it as well in the novel. In the series they only show the peck on the lips but imply that they kiss again, and we only see Suowei's face as he reacts to it. CC and CY have some sexual history in the novel.

Character/story/world/plot building is something the Chinese writers/producers are really good at, they understand that the filler doesn't have to wasted and that the little things interactions and moments between characters can make a big difference!

Eh, to each their own. I personally am not judging them, I'm just not into it. I am glad I started watching this late though, because I was only on ep 2 when the reveal dropped so I was able to dip without wasting too much time 😂

As mentioned, the author recently acknowledged that the webnovel was not up to standard content wise (I'm tactfully paraphrasing, she actually said she was unhinged when she wrote it) and asked viewers not to read the webnovel, instead to focus on the adaptation which has been revised and she is proud of. At this point, the webnovel is a vague timeline guide at best.
