I know he did the best he could. I believe he did the best he could in that situation, he couldn't assume the love he had for YD without condemning her to the worst of punishments, pushing her away was the way he found to try to save her. In the end causing both suffering, but he managed to give her the chance to live in a better place, away from false and treacherous people.
