Censored Romance will be the death of me :'D
Just finished watching this beautiful and (sadly) very underrated masterpiece! Mao Zi Jun and Ian Chen really brought the story and characters to life. The two did such an exceptional job, that even in the face of heavy censorship, we could sense the love and unbreakable bond between the characters Yuelou and Yuzhi. Now, I have an addiction with watching their behind-the-scenes and interviews because I miss their chemistry! I'm very happy that the talented MZJ is getting more recognition, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Ian's touching acting :)
Personally, this is the first time I've watched them act as main leads, so I was thoroughly surprised! Without MZJ or Ian Chen, this show would not be the same.
The whole crew and cast was exceptional! Whether the villain role or supporting role, each character was complex and three-dimensional. They made up for the plot that was sometimes a little bland.
Each episode is around 35 mins long, so it was never too draggy and there is a nice balance between the action and cute/funny scenes.
Due to the story taking place in the turbulent times of Republican era, there were many tragedies (brb crying a river after the final ep)
Remember to have some tissues with you! But, it made this drama such a memorable and unique watch.
Because of this, I also grew to love all the simple, everyday moments between the leads. My favourite scenes definitely has to them eating tangyuan together at the corner shop. It's always the microexpressions, such as their gazes at each other...that really moved me! :') This drama is not just centered on two soulmates, but also explores the personal stories and interpersonal relationships formed in such a tumultuous era.
Also, the whole OST was ETHEREAL! My favourite is 明白 'Mingbai' by 宇西 (Yuxi). It really captures Yuelou and Yuzhi's profound relationship.
Everything about this drama tugs at your heartstrings. Instead of shoving things into our face, this drama makes you FEEL the emotions yourself.
So...what are you doing right now? Go and watch it! HAHA
