This show is incredibly addicting!
I have never sat through a series this long before, but the series is such an emotional roller coaster its difficult to keep yourself down to under 3 or 4 episodes at one sitting. I got into the show thinking it looked like a comedy from the ads but it is WAY more than that. Its a peculiar blend of buddy movie comedy, detective series, crouching-tiger style flying swordsman action, some game-of-thrones style family drama where everyone is related to everyone and trying to kill each other over revenge over one slight or another, toss in a couple of Ray Harryhousen style movie monsters with a touch of the walking dead. The sets and scenery are stunningly beautiful (except for a couple where you can see the ground is painted canvas). The casting and acting is top notch, the effects are very credible usually considering that it is such a low budget series. The music is breathtaking (seriously, I still run into the music in my YouTube feed and still tear up a little bit to some of the songs). The comedy is often laugh out loud funny. A couple making me nearly fall off the couch laughing (and I then had to run to google to do some research on the joke's context). The fighting is well done, particularly when you are wrapped up in the story. This is the only show I've ever seen where as soon as I finished the last episode, I seriously considered immediately starting over at episode 1. I only wished I could erase my brain to watch it for the first time all over again. One warning, you might want to keep a box of Kleenex nearby, maybe a bottle of wine or perhaps a therapist because the tragedy in the series is just as sad as the comedy is funny. And when all is said and done, it ends up heartwarming. To me this show is a 10 out of 10.When I finished it I did go searching the internet and found it also has a book, a comic book, and an anime (which just finished up) called Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (respectively). Its really that addicting.

Probably the best live action japanese comedies from a manga
Its hard not to give this a 10 across the board because the show is just lighthearted fun. The writing is excellent and far outshines most other Japanese comedies that came from a manga (I'm guessing this is from a bl manga comedy because of the absurd story premise). It is funny and the main story so far has not veered into cringe comedy, which I greatly appreciate. The secondary character and secondary storyline does veer into painfully cringe worthy behavior but the character is aware that he is acting link an idiot and questioning his own behavior and that saves it from being too painful i think, and gives a little more empathy for the character. I honestly have been totally unaware of the music because i was so wrapped up in the story, which is oddly compelling. I started watching with supper and ended up watching all available episodes that night. I wish I'd seen more comedies like this. Most manga storylines seem to translate well into anime, but look painful played as a drama. This shows that if done carefully, even a ridiculously absurd story can be made into an excellent and fun live action drama. Its funny and charming. Was this review helpful to you?
In interesting twist on the average "absolute boyfriend" or "chobits" type storyline
This show is both better and worse than I expected. I was expecting it to be really silly and dumb, but it has a LOT more cringe comedy in it than i expected. That being said they played that comedy MUCH better than any other production I have seen making a good bit of it watchable. There are a lot of jokes and gags you can get away with in an anime that if you try the same joke in a live action series its just painful to watch or just too stupid to watch, but you let it slide if its a cartoon. They actually managed to pull that off in a live action series and made it almost acceptable a lot of the time (which is quite a feat). They made the characters likeable and made the story addicting so its almost impossible not to binge watch (though i did find myself skipping a few seconds ahead if it got TOO cringe-worthy i still couldn't stop watching). This show is both more painful and more fun than i was expecting. Was this review helpful to you?
A fun series of mysteries with excellent characters
An Excellent story. My biggest complaint is the detective does the overly dramatic trope of ending his "and the murderer is" speech looking at the person who isn't the murderer before finally pointing to the person at the other end of the line. It felt a little over used (maybe because I grew up on old black and white murder movies where they did that a lot). They do a good job of showing us the clues that the hero notices and they actually point out at least a 3rd of them if not 2/3rds so that we notice them too. but we do see them. I kind of regret they reveal the big secret at the end even though we viewers could probably all have put 2 and 2 together to figure it out with the clues we've seen along the way, and most likely some viewers would have been angry if it was not revealed to us at the end. I do hope they decide to make a second season because the characters were fun to watch and I would like to see them more. The costumes looked good, the sets are well populated and well decorated. The special effects were excellent and a most of the camera work is extremely well done. Was this review helpful to you?
