"So far, I really enjoy it, far more than Blossom, which surprised me. I agree with the review that one of the strongest parts of the drama is how He Weifang grows with the help and support of other characters. This feels far more realistic than OP heroines (such as in Blossom), where the FL is somehow both independently wealthy and the mistress of a spy network, and yet the drama never really gives adequate screentime to build this narrative to make it believable. Obviously, as this is a drama, parts of the plot are *handwavey* too generously coincidental to make the narrative move forward and not realistic to historical standards, but I appreciate how Flourished Peony takes the time to build up He Weifang's business and explains her character growth. The drama also does a good job of giving real motives for why the antagonistic side characters (such as the 2nd ML and 2nd FL) behave the way they do, making their characters feel more fleshed out and not one-dimensional. At times, He Weifang even collaborates with these characters to achieve her own ends. He Weifang's strength as a character is the fact that she is, as most historical women were, limited in freedom and choices, and a great deal of the excitement is watching her be able to overcome those obstacles. Overall, at least for the first 9 episodes, I felt like this costume drama provides some light-hearted entertainment which gives you enough to chew on and treats the viewers like intelligent people. We'll see if it keeps that up, which cdramas notoriously do not.
Personally, I'm also a little tired of the transmigration/reincarnation/rebirth tropes in dramas, where the main characters get a "do-over" to do everything "right" "this time around." A large part of the suspense is not knowing where the main characters will end up or what the future holds, even if you think the drama will be HE. I appreciate the fact that Flourished Peony is not like this."

Even if they had cameras it still wouldn't have made any difference. I just watched EP 8 and Wan Qing was literally beating Wu Niang on the streets dragging her like a doll and nobody bat an eye. It just shows how cheap a woman's life was then
