Excellent Police Team Drama

The first season of this show is not even english subbed. but the second season randomly is so I can enjoy it and review it.

I didn't really feel like I was missing anything when I started this at season 2. The cases are all an episode and a half so you need to watch the next episode to see the conclusion of the case which is kind of annoying. It's also very awkwardly edited where there is a black screen for a ten seconds between cases while the episode is in the twenty minute mark.

Other than that. This is a drama not with a big production budget. All the cases take place in the same gorge/canyon set. The trees are not even well moved around. The actors have few costume changes. The editing is simple. It's kind of redundant seeing suspects and witnesses cycle through the same sets. As the season goes on they do branch out and the sets get more varied and a lot more interesting. You stop getting annoyed by the visuals as the tension rises up.

I think with this simplicity it's the cases themselves that really shine for me. Everything extraneous is removed so you can really focus on the twists and turns of the case. It's also interesting that some of the pathological processes and histology slides are shown which I have never seen before. I love science so I was really interested. Then also the psychology of each criminal is also interesting as the ML and FL find the evidences and confessions. It's so thrilling.

There isn't really even much of a thriller element. It lapses into slice of life a little bit. Nothing happens to any of the officers. There are no shoot outs. They're just solving cases together as a well knit together team. There is a slight romance between the ML/FL but it's not really something that I would say merits much attention. It is not a romance after all. Captain Sheng though is smitten and you die when he does lil things for his lady love. It's cute.

The ending is not a big thrilling case. It felt like they were kind of cut it for time as there needed to be more time to delve into the psyche of such a vicious killer and his past record. But it played it kind of safe and I was upset it didn't go as dark and as thriller as the previous episodes kind of teased. FL or ML wasn't really in peril. I wanted more, but it lapsed back into minimal action which was upsetting.

I did see in some comments that it's a rip off of a korean show. But I haven't seen that show yet so I didn't have a reference point to comment on this. I would compare it to a lower stakes Cold Case -- the Japanese version. But not as exciting.

It's a solid police/coroner show, nothing fancy. If you want that, it will entertain you the entire time and make you think while eating your dinner. It's excellent in it's simple goal.
