The People’s Daily. An important Chinese newspaper published a really good review about The Legend of Zang Hai.
‼️It may contain some spoilers about the theme but nothing specific. It’s a great read.
“A Revenge Narrative That Breaks the Mold of Gratification Dramas While Delivering Equal Thrills
The historical epic The Legend ZangHai, with director Zheng Xiaolong as chief director and Cao Yiwen at the helm, is currently captivating audiences. The series follows ZangHai, originally named Zhinu, who endures a decade in hiding after his family's massacre. Returning to the capital, he navigates court intrigue with architectural genius and political stratagems, outwitting villains to uncover the truth behind his parents' deaths while upholding justice for his nation. Zanghai's journey evolves from stealthy vengeance to a heart set on the greater good, showcasing not just the surface-level catharsis of classic revenge tales but also probing how hatred reshapes and is ultimately dissolved by higher ideals. This transformation elevates him from avenger to guardian. The series breaks from the "eye-for-an-eye" trope dominating Chinese period dramas, weaving revenge and coming-of-age into a dual narrative of human metamorphosis and self-redemption. Amidst high-stakes conflict, it infuses Eastern aesthetics and philosophical contemplation, offering more than visceral thrills. Zanghai's quest begins with tragedy: Imperial Astronomer Kuai Duo is slaughtered by power-hungry Marquis Pingjin for discovering the "Bronze-Scaled Snake" and "Guixi Seal", symbols of sovereignty. Young Zhinu witnesses the carnage before being rescued by a masked figure. Vengeance here demands not just strength, but conviction. Over ten years under mentors Master Xingdou, Gaoming, and Liuchu, the renamed Zanghai hones his mind and skills. Later, he engineers the emperor’s unmasking of Pingjin’s treason and thwarts war alongside allies. This redefines revenge as a biographical rite of passage epitomized by the protagonist’s name ("ZangHai") and his layered arc. Crucially, Zanghai avoids becoming a cold-blooded weapon of retribution. Tormented after manipulating Zhuang Zhixing (Pingjin’s guileless son), he grapples with guilt; his bond with Princess Xiangantu reveals warmth beyond hatred. These growing pains shatter the one-dimensional avenger archetype, illustrating how vengeance distorts yet can also redeem humanity. His evolution marked by skill mastery, identity shifts, and moral awakening culminates in a patriotic reckoning, proving personal justice and collective destiny can intertwine. The dual narrative’s immersive depth sparks debate, yet such discourse reflects audience hunger for genre innovation where gratification meets introspection. By having Zanghai forsake vengeance to protect his country, the series reimagines revenge as a springboard to explore human complexity and historical legacy. This approach revitalizes tradition, embedding individual fates within broader cultural narratives a blueprint for Chinese dramas seeking new vitality in old themes.”
Actually i also don't get it.. why is ML dad rather hold on to the artifact than saving his family life? Like…
The Marquis was going to k!ll them regardless. The Marquis didn't want others to know about the artefact and the dad and his family would have been a liability. So, he decided to take it to the grave and not give the Marquis the satisfaction.
Wdym? Only 2 people know and they’re now his allies. This is good. 😁
I would agree if both reveals were pointless. But they’re not. They set up the drama for future conflict. Now moving forward viewers will be worried about when it comes back to bite him in the butt. That adds tension. It doesn’t take anything away from the drama. Instead it adds to it.
Wdym? Only 2 people know and they’re now his allies. This is good. 😁
Agree to disagree. I think a drama with no stakes is boring. There’s no way that scar wasn’t gonna come back to bite him in the butt. That’s the whole point of him getting the scar to begin with. Otherwise, what are the stakes?
Wdym? Only 2 people know and they’re now his allies. This is good. 😁
Well he purposely showed his friend to save his own life. The 2nd prince finding out was the one that really took him by surprise. But, in the end, he has become a temporary ally. ZH will use him to his advantage. What happens after will depend on the choices Zang Hai makes. It raises the stakes. So I like this new development.
I came across this post from a netizen on Chinese sns: “This is the true path of an ordinary people’s revenge. There are not many noble people who meet you, appreciate you, trust you, and promote you. You can only rely on your wisdom. There is no golden hand, no God’s perspective. If you make a mistake, your life will be in danger. Every step is thrilling. If you want to climb up, there will be people below holding you back, and people above will step on you.”
Zang Hai is an ordinary man. He can’t tell the future, he has no powerful backing, he doesn’t know how to fight he is still really young. Every step he takes is full of danger and we the audience are supposed to experience that danger with him. That’s the whole point of this play. If you expect Zang Hai to get everything right from the beginning your missing the entire point of the drama.
Reading comments, I think it is a bit unfair to compare ZHZ to NIF and JOL, well, the similarity only three are…
I haven't watched NIF. But from the info I've gathered the ML has a huge advantage and a lot of support from powerful characters. Zang Hai is poor with zero backing and is a character that actually has to get his hands dirty. From what I gathered the only common aspects are revenge and political conflict. But to be fair all these revenge adaptations borrow from The Count of Monte Cristo so there will be some common themes. Personally, The Legend of Zang Hai is more my cup of tea because I love that he's the undergo.
Please check out this edit of Xiao Zhan characters running. They did Zang Hai dirty. I am in tears. 🤣 https://x.com/sainthouse1980/status/1925460720097140903?s=46 On a more serious note, I love how each run is different for each character. Xiao Zhan is such a genius actor.
I've been a fan of Xiao Zhan since 2020 and I've loved all of his works. But this drama has completely consumed me in a way I didn't think was possible. I can't even concentrate at work. I'm obsessed.
This drama and this character are quickly becoming my favorites! I love how funny and cute Xiao Zhan is when he's Zhinu and how scary and cunning he is when he's Zang Hai. I love watching his many expressions. Like when he shows the dangerous anger behind his eyes when he's giving a fake smile. Xiao Zhan is so GREAT in this role. I could watch this drama forever.
I loved episode 12. The scenes between Zang Hai and the Zhi Xing were fantastic! Based on the trailers for episode 13 & 14, looks like more people are coming after Zang Hai. My nerves can't take it. Also, looks like we will get more scenes between Zang Hai and An Tu. Looking forward to that as well.

Xiao Zhan really transformed himself into this character. He saw how the child actor cried so he had adult Zhinu cry the same way.
Thank God we got Zheng Xiaolong.
