It's not the 40 eps. It's the way the writing didn't include subplots and foreshadowing in the first 20 eps and left it all to the last 5 episodes. That's lazy.

I think it's bad writing and the fact there aren't enough eps left.

Yes, XZ would be bedridden for a few months at least. Also whipping is actually a physically draining act. There's no way his uncle could have done it for that long.

Deng Kai's acting is so good in this role. The director knows how to get the best angles too

Not expecting realism in a drama but 108 times would cripple or kill a man. At the very least he'd be drenched in blood
