Dai seems to be the kind of person that can deal with him. And if it's too much for him he can stop the relationship. He seems to understand Shun now. I understand that his actions are bad but he's not at all an asshole as you said. He just protect himself by pushing people away when feelings are too strong. It's a reflex not a conscious thing he does to make Dai miserable.
