I started with the GTO live action after the anime wasn't satisfying enough. After that, I was just sort of bored and saw an ad on a streaming site for a newer show, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge. After that, I fell head first in. It's been nearly 10 years and I still love Jdramas as much as the first one I watched. They're just so wholesome. As an American, it feels completely different from our TV.

I have a few tips of newcomers. The first is the age old saying. Never judge a book by its cover. Even if something doesn't seem up your ally, give it a shot. Some of my favorite dramas have been on subjects I thought I would have disliked. Second, I think the sweet spot for Jdramas is in the mid to early 2000s. There are plenty of great new shows as well, but that period really hit the mark. Third, pay attention to Japanese culture, themes, and tropes. They reappear a lot and will help you understand the stories a lot better.

If anyone would like suggestions, feel free to ask. I have a suggestion for every occasion.
